re: Sportswriter friend of mine creates a 24 team playoff (UPDATED)

quote:

Here are the criteria, simple, unslanted, and untainted: FIRST, Have to win 9 games. IF you can't win 75 percent of your games why would you be worthy of playing or a title anyway? 10 points per D-1 wins ONLY, no credit for winning against D1-AA, etc. 5 points per road win 10 points bonus for win over teams with 8 or more wins. 25 Conference Title Bonus (top independent got 12 points) LOSE 20 points for loss to Teams with less than 4 wins or sub D-1

Not a bad concept there, but needs to be tweaked as seen by some of the comical rankings.

I like the idea of punishing losses, especially bad ones, as well as punishing joke schedules. I also like the bonus for a conference championship and the reward for a quality win. But there has to be a better way to do all that.

Even worse he didn't score those teams right. LSU should have about 120.

How can teams having ranking scores not divisible by 5? Something is wrong with the scoring or we are missing something.

re: Sportswriter friend of mine creates a 24 team playoff (UPDATED)
My friend wanted me to post this in response. I must warn you, he's a bit passionate.

quote:

Ahhhh SEC fans at work again.

First off...this is unbiased because it is based on who you play, who you beat, and WHO THEY BEAT.

Second...get off your high horses...you folk claim how dominant you allegedly are OVER ALL TIME. Um no. Before this sketchy run of six titles (only three are legit) you won THREE out of the previous 24. WOW...that's seriously dominant....WOW. Amazing. All time? Three of your teams rank in the TOP 20...of national titles...again "REALLY DOMINANT."

Thirdly...your conference has done good things, but no better nor worse than the other big 3 - Pac 10, Big 10, Big 12....

Fourth...I have forgotten more football than any of you have, I guarantee it. You know how I know ? Because I am not dumb enough to think that ANY of these average SEC teams would come close to the great 1992 Bama team, 1996 Florida team, nor the 70s Bama teams and heck even the 1993 Auburn team....yeah..what do I know.

Fifth...you think YOUR lousy overrated buy BCS votes teams deserve higher rankings. Why? For beating other SEC teams? Really? SEC teams that play a nonleague schedule that consists of teams 30 or so games BELOW .500. A nonleague schedule that includes other BCS teams that aren't even in the upper crust? Oh how about all those tough FCS teams you schedule? You do realize your lousy league has the WORST nonleague schedule of any of the BCS teams, right? Oh, but wait YOU PLAY THE SEC!!!! Oh I see, so for the last six years...you...
A) Go .500 in bowl games
B) Play a non-league schedule of opponents with sub .500 records....
C) Play more games against FCS schools...
D) oh and get run by a BIG 12 school you just adopted that SUCKED in the BIG 12 and get bounced around by a FRESHMAN QB?!??! How is that dominant.
E) Oh yeah, but you play SEC teams! RIGHT! Rinse repeat. ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN and NO BIAS would see there is plenty of merit here.

OH and by the way I am a better writer and reporter than any of you can be considered "football educated." NEWSFLASH BOZOS anyone not working for ESPN and the Southern Media is completely convinced there are some strange irregularities in the rankings these past four seasons...not so much the first three.... I have no problem with Utah State being 8th because they played a tough schedule. They are similar to TCU who may have beaten Auburn in 2010. Why? Oh IDK they had the land's best defense and Auburn managed a whopping 18 points against a sissy Oregon defense. Please... San Jose State? Almost beat Stanford in Palo Alto, and I am convinced the Cardinal are now the one team in the NON SEC world that would win the SEC. Your offenses? Suck. Your defenses? Defend against bad offenses and FCS teams. Aaron Murray your best QB? The kid is a bonehead. Really? Enough said...keep bantering more results next week.... Stupid people....

a 9-win MAC team isn't the same as a 9-win SEC team

Ahhhh SEC fans at work again.

i think all fans outside of the MAC would take offense to this playoff, and i'd say many MAC fans would be perplexed

quote:

Thirdly...your conference has done good things, but no better nor worse than the other big 3 - Pac 10, Big 10, Big 12....

how has it done compared to the MAC?

how would the FOUR MAC teams in your playoff do against them?

quote:

Fifth...you think YOUR lousy overrated buy BCS votes teams deserve higher rankings. Why? For beating other SEC teams? Really? SEC teams that play a nonleague schedule that consists of teams 30 or so games BELOW .500. A nonleague schedule that includes other BCS teams that aren't even in the upper crust?

four words: Kent State versus Kentucky

any system that doesn't get the top 3 teams in the MAC-West division just doesn't deserve to be given legitimacy

Facebook friends. Haven't met him IRL.

He goes on these long tirades about college football and I decided to seek outside opinion. I've wasted hours arguing sports with him.

re: Sportswriter friend of mine creates a 24 team playoff (UPDATED)
i don't think your friend is a douche

i think his issue is that he tried to come up with a universal system to rank teams by wins, made a 24 team playoff (why 24? i don't know), and then ran the results and didn't think about how these results may be a bit wonky

frick the SEC angle. 4 MAC teams? i mean really?

Aaaaand that's where I stopped reading.

Wow. Your friend seriously has some SEC envy issues.

And he truly is a moron if he thinks that a 12-0 MAC team is equivalent to a 12-0 SEC team. Kige Ramsey could do a better job with a playoff system.

Great writer? LOL. This douche can't even get Facebook people to pay him any attention
