Bill Buckner On this night in 1986 in the bottom of the 10th with two outs and the game tied,Buckner let a Mookie Wilson roller go between his legs allowing Ray Knight to score from second for the Mets' win which tied the series at 3.

Somehow, someway once the Mets won game 7 two nights later most Red Sox fans and sports fans in general said "Buckner lost the World Series/Buckner's error cost the Sox the Series" and other erroneous observations.

The Mets had already tied the game up before Buckner's error. Even at that, Knight's run and subsequent Mets win that night TIED the series. Why Buckner was so vilified for years is beyond me.

Because people didn't know he was hurt and if he wasn't hurt the ball that got by him was as routine as they come.

A long time ago, some bar owner wasn't allowed into a World Series game at Wrigley with his pet goat. He claimed the Cubs would never win another WS because they disrespected his goat. Ever since then, the Chicago Cubs organization has blamed their failures on this man and his goat.

He has been forgiven by the Boston fans. And he is NOT the reason Boston lost the series....

Cubs fans are stupid for blaming him. The Cubs had a huge choke job.

I know this, but still. I feel for the guy. He should not have been playing 1st base at that point anyway. He could barely walk.

I know Bartman is like in hiding now, but can we drag out some of the other 10 fans that were sitting right next to him trying to do THE EXACT SAME THING he did?

I do,too. But the whole assertion has always been insane.Lets say Buckner catches the roller, beats Wilson to the bag.Out 3. Go to the top of the 11th.Not "Sox Win."

It has resonance because it's an easy thing to understand.

Not bad pitching decisions or bad managing, etc.

A ball went through a pro players legs.

A nubber.

An easy out.

Doesn't matter if they were tied, that play brought home the winning run.

And Sox fans were so miserable they just gave up and assumed they'd lose game 7. Didn't matter that Buckner played great in game 7, it was all over to them...he made the final gaffe in allowing the Mets to win the series in their minds in game 6.

No the whole point is it's easy, and people don't want to take the time to really figure out why the Sox lost.

It's a simple easy image to blame someone without having to analyze the pitching decisions the past ball the whole game 7, etc.

Just blame the Little League error.

Bartman is just a scapegoat because the Cubs' fans can't accept that their defense and bullpen completely blew that series

Im biased but the Mets comeback in the bttm of the tenth is one of the greatest baseball comebacks ever. No matter who did what. I remember everything about that night, one of my fav sports memories, what a great night that was for a 18 yr old Mets fan

also because Playoff baseball is a tense game that hangs on every pitch. One frick up like that can be huge. I get the Buckner play

The Bartman shite is inexcusable. Cubs fans are just miserable and needed an excuse.

It's pretty simple. Buckner didn't lose the series by not making that play.

The Sox would have won the series right there if he had made the play. He did not make the play. The game/series did not end with that play.

All he had to do was pick up a slow rolling grounder, and the Sox win. He botched it, and they did not win.

Simple as that.
