Let's face it there are 3 major sports Americans of all races and stripes watch: the NFL, NBA, and MLB. These are our staple foods. Hockey is a niche sport kind of like an Ethiopian restaurant. Sports center would never lead with hockey. Ever.

Sure they would if ESPN had the NHL tv contract.

Does sportscenter ever lead with a sport that ESPN doesn't show?

And ESPN is trying to get back into hockey. They have the rights to this summer's World Cup.

I see it like this. How would a city react if their city's team won a championship? When you look at the championship parades for Stanley Cup champions, it's every bit as big as the parades for NFL, MLB and NBA champions. On the opposite end of the spectrum, nobody cares when a MLS or Arena Football League team wins a championship. It's just not the same.

We like to think that.

But it's really football nation.

5 years ago...NFL and College Football were #1 and #2 in TV ratings and Harris Poll.

College Football has declined in popularity the the last 10 years; maybe b/c ESPN-SEC and Bama over-publicity, who knows, but it's still #3.

Harris Poll 2015 - polling American citizens of their favorite sport

1. NFL (32%)

(Huge Gap)

2. Baseball (16%)
3. College Football (10% down from 16% in 2005)
4. Auto Racing (Nascar)
5. NBA
6. NHL
7. Pro Soccer (all leagues)
8. College Basketball
9. Boxing
10. Golf

So the big 4 in Pro sports is really:

1. NFL
2. MLB
3. NASCAR
4. NBA

I don't give a shite if SC ever leads for hockey...all SC is is an extension of all their talking shows combined together for one hours of crap.

I agree somewhat. Speaking for LA, when the Kings won their downtown parade was nowhere near the level of a Lakers parade, but it was decent sized by the photos. But the Lakers have tens of thousands on the parade route and then tens of thousands more when they end at the coliseum. But to your point I don't even recall if the Galaxy has parades. They can't be very big if they do.

And tennis nowhere on the list. What a change from two decades ago.

what about MMA? That has to be growing. At work and in bars it seems people talk about Football #1 by a lot, but after that comes MMA with NBA far behind it. Never meet anyone who talk HOckey, and not much baseball either.

Good point but probably also depends on where you live and who you hang around with. If you live in a place with no nearby baseball team it makes sense that it's discussed less. And if you hang with a younger crowd, MMA will be more popular.

In Southern California baseball is almost exclusively a white and Hispanic fan base. The NBA may be slightly less popular with these two groups but it's very popular with Asians and especially blacks so overall it's the second most popular here after the nfl.

It's the funniest part of the poll.

11. Track and Field
12. Women's Tennis
13. Not sure
14. Men's Tennis

Men's Tennis is dead as hell in America. We need another Mac.

btw, just to show again how much the WNBA is being subsidized by the NBA...

Here is the bottom of the poll...

15. Swimming (1%)
16. Horse Racing (1%)
17. Bowling (1%)
18. Women's Soccer (1%) - US doesn't even have a league.
19. Women's College Basketball (*)
20. WNBA (*) Has a league
21. Women's Golf (*)

* = Less than 0.5% of respondents indicated as their favorite sport.

It's like any other sport besides football, big in cities that have a team and forgotten everywhere else.

I thought it folded...guess it made a comeback under the radar. Never see it on ESPN.
