How exactly does this work?

Magic: Cookie I love you so much. I'm glad you didn't bolt when I got the HIV. As a token of my love, here is an $850,000 necklace!

Cookie: oh Magic you really are magical. It's beautiful!

Magic: Thanks. We have to bring the necklace back in a few days to the jeweler. It's on loan.

I don't get this at all. What the hell was the point?! Is this a culcha thing?

I remember when I cared about other people's personal lives. Reminds me of my first beer.

Rich people do this all the time, especially for awards shows and the like.

Yes, 25 years later that's how that conversation went down.

FWIW, most celebrities don't pay for much of anything you see them wear to events. That's common.

For Magic and his wife, to wear nice, expensive jewelry. For the jeweler, to have someone famous be seen wearing their expensive jewelry...marketing.

Big name designers loan out these expensive multi-million dollar jewelry, its all insured as well, and the famous person walks to a red carpet event or something like that. People know, esp the rich bastards, and the designers get a call inquiring about designing something.. as long as its going to be seen and a picture will be snapped.

If by culcha, you mean the social interactions of predominantly rich white pretentious people on either coast, particularly in the movie or theater industries, then yes.
