So is Rob Manfred stupid? The Cardinals were caught cheating. In brief, the Cardinals, for almost three years, accessed the Astros scouting database without authority. They utilized the database to look at prospects they were interested in and trade notes for the Astros. The Cardinals cheating impacted the entire league from the standpoint that they knew what other teams told the Astros about trades (Correa accessed trade notes 14 times in 2013 alone right before the deadline).

In response Chris Correa is in jail for 46 months

The Cardinals lost 2nd and 3rd round picks and pool money because they (wisely) dumped their first when they signed Dexter Fowler. They were also fined $2 million.

The fact that they didn't lose a first round pick is ridiculous (why not levy the punishment before the offseason began, for instance). The fact that it took MLB two years and change to levy punishment against the Cardinals is beyond ridiculous.

Perhaps the part that makes the least amount of sense, however, is MLB is rewarding the Astros for being dumbasses by giving the forfeited picks and pool money to them. How does that make sense? You solve a competitive balance problem by throwing it out of whack in favor of the idiots that can't change their password? Those picks should have just been lost.

Did Manfred put Goodell in charge of sorting this issue out?

Should have given them the death penalty, imo

Draft pick and pool money reductions over 3 seasons might have been the fairest punishment.

I'm going to assume that this delayed reaction/melt on this subject by you is the fact that you're still somewhat (and quite understandably so) hungover from the WS celebrations.

I actually wasn't sure how pervasive the cheating was. I've read some reportage on what Correa actually did and how the Cardinals story as an organization changed. Manfred believed the second fabrication which is somehow less believable than the organization's first cut on the matter.

If I were a fan of an AL team, I wouldn't be so happy about the Astros additional drafting capabilities.

I agree the punishment was kind of light, but even if they took the first and second round picks at the begin of the offseason and the Cardinals then lose the third round pick for signing Fowler, it works out the same exact way as now.

And I think the reason it took so long is because they were waiting for the Feds to finish their investigation and prosecute Correa.

I just got my tix to the cards Astros spring training matchup at the new astros/nationals spring training facility. I'm expecting some major chin music from both sides... or not

I agree. I can only assume, since you haven't seen nor heard of any team speaking negatively about the Astros getting the picks... there has to be ,'more to the story'. I'm sure there were plenty of back-channel communications among MLB power-brokers. I believe either MLB discovered the problem was bigger than reported... or maybe the Astros disclosed evidence of how they truly were harmed from a strategic stand-point.

Either way, I think the penalties against the Cards were not nearly enough.

He was sentenced to prison on July 18, 2016 (about a year after the investigation was announced). Discipline form MLB wasn't announced until January 30, 2017. That's still inexcusable in my estimation.

fricking dumb arse Cub fans

The guy who broke the story, and talked to the Feds, said Correa was a lone wolf.

He was either butthurt over Luhnow not taking him along to Houston, or really did think luhnow stole shite from cardinals as he left the building and was going to get Luhnow back(there is something between these 2).

Feds did an investigation: No one else involved
MLB did an investigation: NO one else involved
Correa statements checked and read: NO one else involved

Yet you tards still think the Org was in on it. LOL

The organization originally put forth the story that it checked the Astros database once only to ensure that Luhnow didn't steal from them (!). They have since abandoned that bullshite. Now we have to take them at their word that they knew nothing as an organization about it.

Also, the investigation did not find he was a lone wolf despite what Mozeliak propagandizes eveywhere. Here's Correa's own testimony:

What I find funny are the fans. From what I've read online, only 2 fan bases are really heated about this, the Astros(makes sense), and the Cubs (?).

Punishment to Cardinals was light.
payment to Astros was about right if not a little excessive.

Just curious, on what basis do you think the Astros should get the forfeited picks (and pool money)?
