So Bill Simmons hasn't had an NFL/NBA based podcast in 42 days...

how is it possible that someone leaves the shitshow that is ESPN and gets significantly less interesting? Is he trying to kill his career? I know that his "Any Given Wednesday" viewership fell off of a cliff after the first episode, but rebounded after getting some big guests. Getting "interesting" guests will only carry him so long if he completely ignores what made him popular.

Basically completely abandoned long-form on his website. I don't get it.

Yeah, that came up in a thread I made about a month back regarding the Ringer. It was unanimously agreed that it was a big drop off from Grantland. But at the time I still expected Simmons to put out interesting pods. He hasn't come close.

And shite, I LOVED his NBA and NFL draft diaries. He apparently gave those up (long-form and all). It's just a mess.

I think HBO cancelling his show is the only hope for his return to being entertaining.

Isn't he still doing a bunch of entertainment review crap? There are few things less interesting to me than people's opinions about music/TV/movies.

Amen to this.

Simmons seems a bit burned out. The entertainment crap is probably an escape for him, but I'm not interested.

I don't think going from less podcasts to an HBO show is considered "trying to kill his career"

He's likely going to pour all of his resources into the hbo show until it gets canceled.

The most recent episode of Any Given Wednesday had nothing to do with sports

Can you blame him? No one cares about those leagues.

You all should drop Simmons and start listening to a real podcast: Pardon My Take.

Ben is too busy with his horrible TV show.

I actually really like his show. I'm hoping once real sports come back on that he focuses on that, but I don't mind him doing some entertainment stuff while it's sorta in the dead zone. He's addressed the Olympics, but I don't need my sports people to fake interest during the middle grind of baseball season.

I have a feeling once the NFL season starts up his show should get awesome depending on who he can get. I think he's just using the offseason (in theory) to expand his fanbase. I doubt any of the people who start watching/listening for his movie takes will stay on when he starts going on NFL deep dives, but I imagine that's what the HBO execs are hoping.

Still don't like the two guests at once deal. This past Wednesday Favreau was really interesting but Wesley Morris kept ruining it.

The previous week, Ricky Williams was fascinating but I could have done without Rembert Browne being a part of it.

Honestly reminds a bit of the Men in Blazers transition to TV. Like I don't hate it, but it seems to lack a lot of what made them popular in the first place.

Dude I unsubscribed. I was so dissatisfied with the content he has on that Channel 33 stuff. Some obscure writers/authors, talk about shows I've never even heard of or watch. He's really gone off the rails with the content. I think ESPN did just enough of a good job reeling him in and stick to the subject (lack of a better term). Also the guest seem so vanilla when they talk which makes for 1 hour of bland commentary.

Cause ESPN wasn't the issue. He seemed like a bit of a prick. I loved Grantland but for all his bitching and moaning it sounds like "you problem"

There isn't much to talk about with those two sports right now. The last one with Miller was one of the most interesting he's done and he addressed this. He can't get the good analysts like Lowe to come on his show anymore. It's hard to find an entertaining and smart guest.
