The competition back 1973 was much much tougher. If he were alive to race today he'd lap these horses. No way American Pharoah could dominate back then. I'm not trying to be a neigh-sayer here, but Secretariat is the mane.

No it wasn't that's why there were so many triple crown winners back than. The competition is so much better nowadays. AP greater than secretariet

Obviously the competition is better today. Horses are faster, bigger and stronger than ever.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being nostalgic

Who ran the faster times? That is all that matters.

Well, it is no coincidence that the foal crop numbers have dropped back to 1970s level. I think that has A LOT to do with it. Less competition.

This is the exact same as the Bron/MJ discussion. It was so much harder back then, but competitors now are much stronger And faste .

I'm not a horse racing expert, but I saw Secretariat win the Triple Crown and I'm pretty sure he set race records in each of the 3 races. An amazing horse.

Now that, that was a good touch, really brought the whole thing home

Look at all of these pussy jockeys today. In the 90s, they could push and slap and shove. If they did that today, theyd be disqualified. Plus, back in the 90s, every race had the intensity of the triple crown races. It just isn't the same today

Considering Secretariat's time was 3 seconds faster (9 lengths), I'd say you are right. Just because something is more recent doesn't make it better.

Just the facts.

Probably your best thread ever. It's funny but not in the least bit surprising how many people had it go completely over their heads

Secretariat set race records in all three events in the series – the Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5), the Preakness Stakes (1:53), and the Belmont Stakes (2:24) – records that still stand today.

Per Wiki

I am old enough to have seen Secretariat run back in the day. Truly amazing.
