It's amazing. There are many older LSU "fans" that are so sure that Saban will come back to coach the tigahs one last time.

Don't try reasoning with them. They'll be quick to tell you how you "don't know how the real world works."

Yeah ok.

That is pure bullshite and you know it. Saban never really wanted to come to LSU and he would have bailed a lot sooner of the deal had been right. Practically every year LSU fans had to endure the end of season kabuki dance with one or another NFL team. He wanted out of Baton Rouge but wasn't stupid enough (or his agent wasn't) to leave unless there was considerably more money involved. But all of you Saban lovers go ahead and cling to your illusions.

Funny reading all this. I am close to some Bama Alumni that confirmed a similar reaction to his and His wife's first weeks/months in Tuscaloosa. She really disliked living there at first and it weighed on Saban. Heard he actually broke down emotionally a couple of times.

In restrspect, Saban has admitted that BR, all of LA, and LSU was a very fond time in their lives with great memories. He left because of the ultimate "trophy" in a football coaching career is to win big in the NFL. But within 2 years, he realized his leadership style did not work with NFL millionaire players. So when Bama came calling, it was as cushy a soft landing back in College coaching with a premier, tradition rich program in a rebuilding phase and a big money grab...just like what attracted him originally to LSU.

That's at least one tiger fan's intrepetation of the truth.

Haven't you heard? Nick didn't want the Bama gig. His wife forced him to be interviewed and to take the job!

I don't know if this post belongs in SEC or here but since it was about his time at LSU. I"ll put it here. Supposedly he wanted to change his mind after coming to Baton Rouge.

Don't be too hard on yourself.

Hold tight to your little Paddington and your illusion that Saban did not flirt with the NFL every year he was at LSU, loves Baton Rouge and keeps a secret retirement property in Perkins Rowe, regretted the decision to go to Miami from the first day and begged LSU to let him come back, still holds out hope that one day he will be able to come back to coach LSU, at which time LSU will never again lose a single football game.

Its dreams like that that keep you Sabanistas alive, so do what you have to do to survive.

I might buy into this if Nick had never coached in the NFL and didn't know all bout "NFL millionaire players". He had coached in the NFL 4 yrs. Nick is a smart guy. I don't know what made him run from Miami after just 2 yrs., but I am hard pressed to believe it was due to "NFL millionaire players".

I don't know either, Lonnie. I have heard several theories.
One is that he realized that with equal or almost equal talent, he would never dominate the NFL.
Another is that he was dealing with ego driven older men who made lots of money and didn't buy into his out of control 2 year old temper tantrum coaching style.
Another was the fact that he never did have complete and total control of the team. He didn't have ownership and owners are prone to meddling.
Another was that Terry was totally miserable in Miami which is at lest partially true. The culture in Miami was a total shock to her. She is a small town girl who was accustomed to being a major celebrity in East Lansing and in Baton Rouge. In Miami she was relegated to "who's that?" status. And we all know if mamma ain't happy NOBODY is happy.
Probably a combination of all of the above. One thing is fairly certain it was not because he missed coaching at LSU and wanted to come back.

Yeah but the quote didn't actually come from Saban.

quote:

There were reports of it at the time — after comments by his friend, MSU trustee Joel Ferguson — but both Saban and Ferguson then issued statements saying that the coach just regretted leaving friends in East Lansing and had no second thoughts about the new job.

But in "Saban: The Making of a Coach," by Monte Burke — due out Aug. 4 — Ferguson paints a dramatic picture about a call he got from Saban from Baton Rouge a day or two after he had agreed to the move.

"He was down there by himself in a hotel room," Ferguson is quoted. "He was lonely without (wife) Terry there and seemed fragile. He told me that he didn't like it there, and that he didn't think he wanted the LSU job and he wanted to come back."

I guess reading comprehension is just that hard especially when it pertains to something you try extremely hard to believe it isn't true.

I am glad he didn't go back and that he made the move to Baron Rouge. As a graduate and supporter, I will always give Saban credit for the turnaround of the LSU program. His time in Baton Rouge truly transformed the program and Tiger fans collectively can rally around that point.

The rest of it dealing with things like his arrogance, veracity, like-ability, etc. don't really matter other than those being traits that make me dislike him personally and wanting to witness his bitter defeat at the hands of the Tigers.

If I had to bet, this would my pick. While I get the "mamma" thing, I don't think there is anyway Nick cuts and runs from that gig after only 2 yrs. unless Nick wanted out badly.

While I was disappointed to see him leave LSU, I was disappointed with his almost yearly flirtation with the NFL as well.

While Miles has his flaws and he has had a couple flirtations, it's been pretty nice having a successful guy at LSU who wants to be at LSU as opposed to having a guy here who didn't want to be at LSU.

One aspect we haven't talked about is that Nick is a Democrat. He's pretty liberal. Joel Ferguson his friend at Michigan State is a big-time Democrat and Nick's mentor at Michigan State George Perles is a big-time Democrat. Nick has talked repeatedly about the trauma of Kent State and the impact it had on him.

If you read between the lines Nick is a Democrat which is fine but I find it interesting that he has had the most success in one of the most conservative States in the country. I've always thought that one of the ways Nick has connected to many African-American recruits is through this.
