Rush: What Happened to Discipline in Sports?

He makes valid points. For me, this is old news. No more respect for the game. Just give me my money. No appreciation for the guys who made huge sacrifices and truly made the games they play great.
This other guy Doug Baldwin scores a touchdown and pretends to drop his pants, take a dump on the football. In baseball, you have players that do not run out ground balls to first base. You got players routinely will hit a long fly ball and stand there at the plate watching, posing. It won't go out, it'll hit the wall, and instead of ending up at third base for a triple, they're barely making it back to first base on what should have been an automatic double.

Hey oldtimer, go back to the rocker and listen to the radio.

Is it really that much different than it's ever been though, or are we just hearing about it more often (and a LOT faster) than we used to..?

quote:Respect for the game? That phrase always cracks me up. Why does "the game" deserve respect? It's a damn game.
No more respect for the game.
To your point, it's not just a sports issue.

The only thing that's different is that they get penalized out of the arse for it these days. Bringing tons of attention to it.
Did Rush miss all the throat slashes and Sharpies? There's always been showboaters in sports.

I'm pretty sure "ego" isn't a 21st century invention.

I enjoy it and wish there was more of it
I wish when Klay Thompson dropped 37 in a quarter he would have broken out the Sam Cassell big balls dance.

In radio, you have pill-poppers and sex tourists. What happened to discipline in broadcasting?

I was annoyed that they censored the poo poo ball, but how fricking stupid is that?
you score a TD in the super bowl, and you celebrate by pretending to take a dump?
to add to rush's list: players following their shot. No one runs up to the basket to follow their shot, or not many. They all fade back and start transitioning to defense.

Rush isn't stupid, so I'll call him dishonest as usual here. Fighting in all sports was far more common 40 years ago; "Boys will be boys" was the attitude. Now players are disciplined for feigning a throat slash. Women comprise of 40% of the NFL fan base now, and Rush is trying to tell us that there is LESS discipline now?

I'm old and still think Grandpa Rush needs to stop shooing kids off his front lawn.
Discipline in sports? Is he crazy? For kids now to become pro athletes, they are likely specializing at an extraordinarily young age, putting in countless hours and miles for many years. Just because they might want to celebrate a little has nothing to do with discipline.

People should be super serious when playing a game.

Ty Cobb was one of the most brash, racist and dirty undisciplined players of all time.
But hey, these young guys just don't respect the sport.

If you want a true response... money, fame, ego.
And cameras.

And Reggie Miller retired a decade ago.

The pace the NBA teams play at today, you would get absolutely torched sending more than 2 or 3 guys to go rebound.
If they know it is short coming off their hand then they will likely try to follow it up, but chasing down every one of your jumpers just isn't smart unless you are around the painted area.
