World number one Rory McIlroy has ruptured a ligament in his ankle and is a doubt for the Open, which begins in nine days' time at St Andrews.
The 26-year-old Northern Irishman won last year's Open at Hoylake.
He wrote on Instagram: "Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends.
"Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started."
A spokesman for McIlroy said he has not yet ruled himself out of the Open, despite the injury.
McIlroy, who has won four majors to date, was set to play in the Scottish Open this week in preparation for the Open.
He could also miss the chance to defend his US PGA Championship title in mid-August.
McIlroy finished fourth at this year's Masters back in April, and joint-ninth at last month's US Open - both won by Jordan Spieth.

His spokeman, Sean O'Flaherty, said he was definitely out of the Scottish Open, which starts Thursday at Gullane. O'Flaherty said they would not know until the end of the week the prospects of McIlroy teeing it up at the Open Championship, which begins at St. Andrews on July 16.

McIlroy has too much goofball in him for him to ever settle down to business and become a truly dominant, great champion.
But he does have great natural talent for the game.

Wow Rory - just wow
But if I had his PGA tour record and winnings, I would have torn more than a ligament living the life....

Didn't Tiger Woods win the U.S Open with a torn ACL? Rory should man up and play.

Certainly helps the field. St. Andrews always good for Rory who can blast it over those fairway bunkers. It's why John Daly won there and why Jordan may have trouble there.

he's scared. Speef is garnering the new tiger factor

Spieth slam
What the hell is a Speith slam? Jordan is going for THE Grand Slam. The media made up some stupid name for Tiger because he won 4 majors in a row (a phenomenal and mind blowing feat), but nonetheless, Tiger did not achieve a grand slam. Jordan has that opportunity.
