One of the first guys I was a huge fan of. Loved watching him run the option at Air Force.

quote:

Dee Dowis, whose mastery of Air Force’s option offense made him a Heisman Trophy finalist, died early Monday morning in a traffic accident near Atlanta.

quote:

“I don’t have adequate words to describe what a personal loss this is for me,” former Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry said from his South Carolina home Monday night. “It’s a sad day for Falcon football. I’m sure so many people who enjoyed watching him play feel as empty as I do today.”

What a terrible thing, to lose Dee Dowis so young. I love Air Force football. I watched him when I was a kid and couldn't wait to see him play. Sad to see one of my football heroes pass.

My brother was at the AFA during that time so I watched the football team a little bit. They were actually very competitive during that stretch, Chad Hennings was monster DT who flew A-10 warthogs. My high school ran the wishbone, so we'd watch Dowis. He was brilliant running it. I'm saddened for sure, so very young. God speed young man

The debate has been done a few times here. You have people listing the usual suspects

J.C. Watts @ Oklahoma
Tommy Frazier @ Nebraska

A few others are always thrown in there. But IMO the greatest option QB is Dee Dowis. The guy was a absolute magician running that Air Force Flex Bone offense. I wish their was more video online of him.

Very sad. The accident happened very close to our house. We woke up to the sounds of the sirens responding early Monday morning.

The strange thing is how the accident was described - that he was going the wrong way on the interstate (southbound in the northbound lanes), and then pulled into the median and backed up into the northbound lanes to try to go north.

That confuses me in two ways. First, where had he gotten on? Most of the interchanges on this stretch of 85 are normal and not the type that tend to lead to confusion about getting on (you either turn right or cross the bridge and turn left). Secondly, which direction was he really trying to go? If he was trying to go south, but was in the northbound lanes, why did he attempt to return to the northbound lanes as opposed to just pull across the median and get in the southbound lanes?

We have just recently watched Concussion, and my wife said she wondered if he was suffering from CTE.
