Red Sox are going for groundball heavy pitchers with upside. Honestly, I think they go hard after Shields as he fits that groundball heavy mode.

Good trade. Detroit needs to get some bullpen guys though.

Tigers getting Cespedes, Simon and some relatively young pitchers for Porcello, Suarez and Crawford. I think the Tigers did just fine.

i guess Detroit thinks they can re-sign Max or add another front line SP

trading Smyly last year and now Porcello, their future looks bleak on the mound

They also moved Fister.

Red Sox just added Masterson now.

Cespedes and Simon aren't as good as you think they are IMO

This. The Tigers did not get better today. I say that as a huge Tigers fan too.

Ew. I really hope he is just acting as Clay insurance.

Cespedes just produces runs and plays decent defense. I don't think it is any coincidence the A's offense went into the toilet following his trade to the Red Sox. Suarez was a backup infielder. Cespedes will likely be the replacement for free agent Torii Hunter who put up worse numbers than Cespedes in 2014.

Simon won 15 games with a 3.44 era for the Reds in 2014. That's pretty good for a team that went 76-86. Porcello went 15-13 with a 3.43 era for the Tigers who went 90-72.

The Tigers may not have improved by the trades, but do they have to in order to win the AL Central?

He's an above average hitter, the power is flashy but his plate discipline holds him back. He had a career high in plate appearances, career low in walks with a terrible 5.4% walk rate.

It surely didn't help but the A's also had other guys who were playing over their head that came back to earth.

His ERA outperformed his FIP by almost a run. He's also 33.

Only 26 years old and his FIP and other peripherals back up his ERA.

Maybe, maybe not. White Sox certainly got better and the Royals were basically just as good last year. That doesn't even account for a solid Indians team.

All depends on Tigers resigning Max.

I like this trade. We need pitching and both are free agents after 2015. I like Cespedes but we can handle losing his bat. Sucks we missed out on Lester.

I read on a local Detroit page that the Tigers are not actively pursuing Scherzer anymore, per Dombrowski.

I think hell sign elsewhere. That leaves Verlander and Sanchez locked up for a few more years, Price who is a free agent after this next season, and the guy from NY and Cin they just signed. I think they will be fine if they miss out on Scherzer, although it does sting a little bit.

I think they refuted that and said they're still very much pursuing Max.
