Per mlb.com. Possibly just a ploy to drive up the price for the Yanks, Orioles, and Jays to get him , but all reports are they are serious contenders, though I'm not convinced.
Not sure what the hell Epstein is trying to do with the supposed possibility of Burnett as well as possibly pursuing Lowe and the trade for Willis. Possible crowded rotation competition with Beckett, Dice K, Lester, Wake, Buccholz, and Masterson already exists with or without these additions.

If I was him I would trade Beckett and Rice K for Lowe, just flat out release Wakefield, and trade Buccholz, Masterson, and Lester for Wandy. Let Willis, Lowe, and Wandy run a 3-man rotation.

Why do they continue to run Wakefield out there?

All he does now really is eat up innings, but rarely does he go out there and earn wins the way he used to. He's missed starts due to injuries the last few seasons as well. I wouldn't mind seeing him at this point be used as a long reliever and have Masterson or Buccholz inserted into the rotation. Wake was once the closer so the bullpen concept wouldn't be new. Francona and Theo seem to have alot of loyalty and faith with Wake though and there has been talk of him wanting to reach 192 wins or more to pass Clemens and Cy Young for the franchise record.

They say the cooler the air the less effective the knuckler is, don't know why that is.
Didn't stop Grady Little from trotting him out there to save the '03 ALCS though
