What a joke it is seeing these greedy owners want the people to pay for a stadium so they can make more money. Especially since the owner can pay for the stadium himself.

In this instance he can't pay for the stadium.. This debate is a tired one in the end... It truly shows the ineptness of politicians and their inability to negotiate (mainly because the consequences are so in consequential) and the publics fascination with a sports franchise.. Because they can just say no. I find it odd that people fault the owners for asking a certain municipality to pay for X amt.. Why wouldn't they?

Isn't Davis one of the least wealthiest owners?

Yes, but Davis can borrow 200M from the NFL of the Raider organization's 500M part of the deal..

Adelson is working his political strings to get the math where he wants it..

Is it the taxpayers or are they raising the hotel tax so its the tourists really paying?

hell no, he's one of the brokest owners in the league.

I had thought they were going to raise the taxes on hotels? If so, the visitors pay for this stadium, not locals.

The same reason that I worked two jobs instead of applying for government aid.

Of course they do. How in the hell else would Davis pay for a new stadium.

And Vegas politicians will make it happen, whether the public wants it or not.

quote:

With Vegas trying to overcome the gambling stigma and become a major-league city, it’s easy to justify coughing up plenty of cash — especially since the money will come from taxes imposed on out-of-towners who visit the city’s hotels.

There is the key. If it took a billion dollars of taxpayer money, they would make it happen to become a "major league city." The same way cities in danger of losing a sports team fork over money to avoid becoming a "minor league city."

The Raiders also have a wide stream of guaranteed TV money they could use to secure a nice loan from a bank. And for Sheldon Adelson: paying for new football stadium:: timbo71351: buying a new car.

I also wonder about raising hotel taxes in a city that's driven entirely by tourism. And the average resident gets it in the arse anyhow. Local governments end up on the hook for bond payments if the tax collections come up short. God forbid another 9/11 or recession happens and Vegas tourism falls in the toilet.

Going to be worth it for vegas. They will get a Super Bowl out of it. UNLV can play in it. A nice bowl, concerts. The prices of stadiums have shot through the roof, so to pay 700mil, by raising lodgings tax 1%, and the rest with a bonds should be OK

Davis isn't even a billionaire. Last I saw his net worth was 500 million.

Only 500 Million? Explains that haircut.

Key point

"the money will come from taxes imposed on out-of-towners who visit the city’s hotels."

NFL stadiums are terrible investments. One billion for 7-8 games a year? No way it can repay that cash.

Shut up. These stadiums are used by the team 8x per year. The city will benefit by hosting bowls, concerts and other events throughout the rest of the year. It's a benefit to the city, that will bring potential revenue opportunities.

If the NFL owners don't enjoy the full return, why would they have to put up all of the capital? That's dumb.

Stadium concerts aren't as common as you think. Definitely don't justify the city's investment.

And yet there are plenty of new ones being constructed all over the country.

Having a brand new stadium is a bigger benefit to the city than an individual franchise.

It makes more financial sense to build a stadium and lease it to the franchise for both sides.

not in this case, visitors will pay for it via tax on rooms, and they can use it for even bigger conventions for their events.

they already hold the biggest conventions, now they can hold even more people and booths.

unlike many cities, this will work and is being paid for by visitors, city wont miss a dime, and should make even more cash from visitors.

Vegas is unlike other cities, where owners are bending cities over and stealing their cash. Vegas wont pay a dime, and will benefit from it.
