Before I ask this, I'm saying that I fully support the brave young men and women that defend this country and have an incredible amount of respect for them.

Having said that, why is this game pumped up so much every year? Army is usually terrible and Navy is at best an average team. So why does it get it's own weekend and why is it considered so special? People say "Well it's more than just a football game" but is it really? Yeah these guys deserve all the respect in the world but I just don't know why so much emphasis is put on this game.

A big part is that it is a pure rivalry with little to no chance of players going pro afterward, so it is strictly bragging rights and pride - the true essence of a rivalry.

3 downvotes instead of 3 explanations. It's pathetic that people would rather downvote because they think I'm disrespecting the military (which I am not) instead of engaging in the discussion

It's a fun rivalry game. I think people appreciate watching a throwback style football game full of players who are usually great people who will do a lot of good for their country.

It's not a legit question at all. This game isn't about football, it's about celebrating the kids who play their hearts out on the football field but also just to celebrate both the institutions. Who cares how good the teams are?

Ole Miss is never good at football and people still go to their games

I like this explanation.

and I can acknowledge that while also acknowledging that, as a football product, it's lacking

Everyone has a tie to this game also. People have relatives that have served so it's a game that is truly national.

It's not going to be Patriots vs Cardinals but it's fun watching two triple option teams play. It's like watching a game from the early days of football.

It's mostly national pageantry.

Why do you care how much "hype" it gets?

Exactly. Navy has won something like 14 games in a row over Army. Yet this game gets it's on weekend. It's a great rivalry game but the fact that there's so much emphasis put on it makes no sense to me.

It's not about the skill on the field.

It is about the heart.

It makes perfect sense. Just because you don't get something doesn't mean it's illogical. No one pumps it up as a great football product. It's about pageantry.

It is a reminder of a bygone age when college sports meant actual student-athletes, not a minor league for thugs
