I see that Army had 62 football commitments this year, 71 in 2014, 44 in 2013, and 52 in 2012. Do they not have to follow the same guidlines as other programs?

I was under the impression that if you went to a military academy that everyone got scholarships. Not sure though.

Does anyone actually care if Army is over signing? I'm not going to complain about too many kids wanting to join the armed services.

NCAA is always rigging the deck for Army. So tired of it.

I was just curious. I'm not saying they should get into trouble

I don't think they consider it a scholarship, but everyone who enters one of the service academies is there with no charge of tuition/room/board because you are being educated to commission as an officer in the military. The government pays your way in return for your active service commitment after graduation.

Students who do not graduate/fail out/etc. typically have to repay the incurred expenses, but if you graduate (and serve your 5/3) you are free and clear.

As such, there are no athletic (or any other type) scholarship, so they do not have to adhere to the NCAA limits. Basically those squads are all considered walk-ons.

Due to the U.S. Military Academy appointment process, names of recruited cadet-athletes are not available until they arrive for Reception Day this summer. Just Curious where did you see these numbers that you posted?

I'm under the impression that the service academies require that all students play a varsity sport, so it probably just means that all those guys showed up on campus with the intention of playing football.

I believe the requirement is two intramural sports or one varsity sport. And the academies offer pretty much every sport you can imagine. Skiing, equestrian, you name it. The Naval Academy even has a croquet team.

Plus, West Point has a sick indoor obstacle course every cadet most complete LINK

Not varsity, but some kind of sports, club, intramurals, etc. obviously there are physical standards but not everyone is a D-1 athlete

I thought you could leave the first 2 years and owe nothing? It's after you start the third year that you are locked in?

At one point, if you flunked out of West Point, weren't you required to fulfill your service obligation in the enlisted ranks?

Yeah the first two years you can be okay but after that you are gonna have to pay. I'm not aware if any west pointers that failed and had to be enlisted. I did worker with a fueler who went to ocs and quit. So he was reclassed to whatever the army's needs were.

Yes all cadets do play a sport whether its football, basketball, wrestling, judo, baseball etc. it may not necessarily be NCAA sanctioned or what not but every cadet has to play some sort of sport.

I hadn't had the chance to see the course but yeah they have to complete it. There's always a few cadets that are prior enlisted

R-day is quite an experience. Lots of the old grads come in. But it can be hectic especially if you are a medic like I was for last year.
