Those who are trying to downplay the significance of this announcement, and those who harbor hatred and prejudice against gay people, this thread is not for you. I can't believe how many people there are who want to put this guy down or pretend that this isn't a huge step forward for the historically bigoted realm of professional sports.

This thread is for those who recognize how much of a badass Michael Sam is. It's incredibly difficult to be a gay professional athlete, and that's why so few to this point have come out. I am happy that he felt there was a safe enough environment for him to be honest with his teammates and now the media. He is not only risking his draft stock and financial future, but more importantly he is risking being targeted with hate speech and death threats from fans and players. Michael Sam is a brave young man, and I am proud to have him in my favorite sports league. I hope the league and its fans give him as much support as he deserves.

Who is trying to "put down" this guy?

Someone saying they are tired of all the media talk doesn't mean they are putting down this guy and his accomplishments

And I have done neither of those, I was just pointing that out

I'm sure there were athletes who were verbally abused before Jackie Robinson, but his abuse was at another level. I suspect this country has become more tolerant since then, but any time you're breaking a barrier, people are going to hate you.

The kicker from Bama has received multiple death threats, he's not black or gay

ETA: and seriously, who in the hell has came out saying they hate Michael Sam? I haven't seen 1
The world will always have it's share of assholes and just plain miserable people, so if someone has actually said they don't like or hate Michael now simply because he's gay then your wasting your time getting all worked up over someone like that

I am as excited as when any other young player declares he's going draft eligible.

I think this is a couragous act. This is going to force a dialogue within a community that traditionally has been a bit homophobic (I am speaking about the larger black community) and I guess I can see the historical/religious context from which that homophobia has been situated.

I don't beleive in that lifestyle but whatever someone does is not my business. I think that they should stop talking it up. The guy said hes gay then be done with it. Don't downplay it but dont play it up either. Saying he is coregous for what he is will start the negativity. JMO.

Fair point to that but you are talking about behavior that is in process toward normalization...so at this point this man is going to stand in as a role model for LGBT youth...

But he shouldn't be. He should just be himself. Like I said saying he is a role model and corageous is just setting him up for negativity. Until they stop making them out to be rold models then the negativity will continue. I'm straight so should that make me a role model for anyone?

Courageous my arse.

The courageous ones will be the players who will speak their minds and not give in to the gay terrorist and their henchmen in the media (yes, this mean you, ESPN).

There was a far-left slanted Yahoo! piece (yeah, go figure ) where the author talked about how he came out in August and none of his teammates had any problems with it.

Do you really believe this?

Now, let's pretend that we live in Fantasyland and assume that these players didn't have their scholarships threatened. These players saw exactly what happened to professional players who dare to say that they disagree with the "gay lifestyle" and how they don't think that it's "normal". These players were ostracized and terrorized for just stating what they believe -- something that the vast majority of the world has believed up until the last 10 years -- including the far, far, far, far left's Dear Leader.

It will be the same way in the NFL -- say a word and you will be f'ing terrorized.

So, if you want to talk about courage .....

Could not have said it better myself

I find it hard to believe that no one on Mizzou had any problem with it

I am sure that there were people who did, but were forced to keep it to themselves
