Position specific helmets possibly coming to the NFL

This is a good step, but I wonder if certain players who could play multiple positions are going to require multiple helmets on the sidelines.
So if and when this is implemented, have fun watching NFL ticket prices skyrocket.

The NFL isn’t trying to get into the helmet business. But they are willing to share their concussion research with manufacturers in an effort to end up with better helmets.
NFL executive vice president of health and safety policy Jeff Miller brought Dr. Jeff Crandall, the chairman of the league’s head neck and spine engineering subcommittee to meet with reporters Tuesday at the owners meeting. And while Crandall said the science is still a few years away, the eventual benefit could be position-specific helmets in hopes of reducing the chances of concussions.
Crandall said that since different position groups already wear unique cleats or shoulder pads for the specific demands of the jobs, customizing helmets is a logical next step.
“We know that players in different positions receive different types of severity and frequency of impacts,” Crandall said. “So we think a position-specific helmet makes sense.”
For instance, linemen tend to receive lower severity hits to the head at a higher frequency than skill position players, the result of banging into each other on every snap as opposed to taking high-speed hits in the open field. So focusing the protection at the front of the helmet would be a more effective way to protect linemen.
Crandall, the director of the Center for Applied Biomechanics at the University of Virginia, said the first step is coming up with a reliable sensor to detect impacts, and the hope is that one can be found by 2018 or 2019. If that can be found, they’re willing to share the research with manufacturers, in hopes of such helmets being available by 2020.

I like the idea of the players being protected more for the inevitable big hit, but their tackling form has regressed so much over the past 15 years that I don't think wearing a linebacker helmet vs a TE helmet will prevent or aid in concussion reduction overall.
What's the link between prices and helmets? I don't believe for one second that they pay anywhere near full price for their helmets and even if they did, with 50k seats, that's about $.03 per person.

Novel idea. Make the safest helmet in all aspects of the word the helmet for everyone

They need to let alternate helmets come back so we can bust out the creamsicle unis.

For Quarterbacks only:

When are they gonna make them wear their knee pads?

Helmets don't help concussions as much as many people think they do.
The brain slamming against the skull is the issue. A helmet can't prevent that.

This sounds like a logical idea. Not sure why ticket prices would skyrocket.

Would that mean heavier helmets for some? When do they sue for neck pain for having to wear a heavy helmet?

Seems it could be better for the repetitive, low impact hits than the less frequent high impact hits. I don't think brain is hitting skull every time a lineman tangles on the line, but he's likely still bumping helmets on most snaps.

The brain absolutely is even in lower impact situations. It's subconcussive but is still brain trauma.
That's what CTE is all about.

If they want to eliminate the concussions they should go back to leather helmets and get rid of facemasks. That would be the end of using the helmet/head as a weapon, no leading with the face or crown.

Youd need to get rid of shoulder pads and and arm padding.
Basically rugby.

Exactly. The day a helmet can prevent the rapid deceleration of the brain will be the day a helmet can prevent concussions and CTE. Read: Never

That's what American football is turning into thanks to Roger Goodell.

In other words, the thing that it's supposed to be?
