Player fires agent over losing 2million. UPDATED in OP

quote:

49ers cornerback Tarell Brown indicated Thursday that he has fired agent Brian Overstreet after losing a $2 million salary bump for 2013 by not taking part in the club’s offseason workouts.

“That’s what agents get paid to do — to orchestrate the contract and let you know what you can and can’t do as far as workouts, OTAs, things of that sort,” Brown said Thursday of Overstreet, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “That’s what he got paid to do. He didn’t do that. So, in my opinion, you have to be let go. We all are held accountable for our actions and it’s just part of the business.”

quote:

Per the Chronicle, Brown — who told reporters he found out about the salary loss via Twitter — indicated he was thinking about his compensation reduction while practicing on Thursday.

quote:

“It definitely was hard to concentrate just because my mind was somewhere else,” Brown said, according to the Chronicle. “But this is a business. And I understand that. And I have a job to do. The 49ers are paying me to do a job. I have to come out here, regardless of what’s going on off the field, personal or financial.”

quote:

Technically, it wasn’t a workout bonus. Brown’s salary hinged on participation in the offseason workouts. By failing to show, his base pay drops from $2.925 million to $925,000.

quote:

The buzz in league circles is that Brown wasn’t aware of the amount of cash hinging on his participation in offseason workouts. On one hand, he signed the contract — and arguably he should have read it. On the other hand, his agent (who has a clear incentive to see Brown maximize his compensation) may have failed to explain it to Brown.

UPDATE:
quote:

Lost in the notion that Brown lost $2 million by not showing up for offseason workouts is the reality that, per a league source, Brown triggered the $2 million escalator by participating in more than 80 percent of the snaps in 2011 and 2012.

quote:

So the clause didn’t expressly hinge $2 million on Brown showing up for 2013 offseason workouts. The key factors were playing time in 2011 and 2012. Brown met them.

Granted, he didn’t show up for offseason workouts, which allowed the Niners to taketh away that which they had given. Eth.

I guess he can't go back and fire his elementary school reading teacher. Because, you know, HE signed the contract.

If I paid a guy 15% of my salary and he let two million dollars slip through the cracks I would have done the same thing.

Agent gets 3-5% usually so agent lost a good deal of income as well

He probably should know about the workout incentives himself. But I have no problem with him firing his agent over this. $2 million is a big chunk of dough, even in California.

if I only worked half of the year and I was actually competitive and wanted my team to win, I think I might show up for workouts.

Yeah I mean they both screwed up. The agent deserves to be fired.

I believe the maximum for agents is 3% on the football contracts.

you'd like to assume he knows, but he's getting paid 3mil to play football. he has an agent, that agent is getting PAID, so it is his/her responsibility to let you know these fine print stuff

Well the player can't fire himself for being a dumbass so he might as well fire his agent for being a dumbass.

He skips out on his job, loses money, blames someone else. Sounds like Murica to me.

Player should have known, but the agent is payed to remind him of these type of things. Deserved to be fired and have his name put out there just as the player deserves to lose out on the money.

bullshite, that's what he pays his agent for. The agent should have been well aware of what was in the contract and informed his client.

I think it is a hell of a lot bigger than saying he lost out on $2M. He lost out on around 2/3rds of his salary for the year.

I'd be interested in hearing what the agent has to say. Did he in fact let his client know, but is being the fall guy here? Or was the firing justified?
