I recently purchased a ping pong table and need help setting some table rules to prevent some of the inevitable complaints by my neighbors. These are some of the house rules we're already at disagreement over. Anyone here plays by rules different than these?

-All serves must land cross court
-Re-serves only occur if the ball hits the net and lands on the opposing side. Every other failed attempt at a serve results in a point for the opponent.
-A players can NOT lose on a serving fault
-Inadvertent paddle contact counts
-Shots that hit the edge of the table, but do not bounce up are still in play
-A return shot that originates off the side of the table, but does not cross over the actual net space are still in play

Don't think so.

Everything else looked legit.

I've rarely played like this. I don't know if it is in the rules or not, but it's certainly a lot less fun if you have to serve cross-court.

This is one that I grew up playing that if it was off, then it was off, no matter if you hit it with your paddle. But apparently most people play that if you hit it with your paddle, it's in play. I've never liked the rule, but I appear to always be in the minority on that one.

This is how I play with my friends, which isn't often or super-competitive. If you hit it far enough off the table, and I can't stop it with my paddle, you're chasing after that shite. If you swing at it, then obviously that's different.

Paddle is in play, that's how I've always played. Even if it's an accident, sort of like getting drilled by the tennis ball.

Not a fan of this rule. It just lets the player keep trying to send killer serves until he gets one knowing he can't lose. That's kind of an advantage that you're being rewarded for losing for

I was referring to the overzealous return shot that inadvertently hits your paddle while you're in the return position. You didn't swing at it or have any intentions on hitting it.

Those rules sound about right to me. Pretty standard IMO.
For more fun, we like to play all serves anywhere on the table count, just so you can catch people sleeping on the cross court serve.

Agreed. Most of the time, you basically "caught" it with the paddle instead of grabbing it with your hand if it was off the table. I agree that if you actually make a play on it, then it's in play.

And that's just how we played (me and my dad, and me and some of my friends). But the older I got, I realized that more people played that the paddle is always in play.

agreed, if it is off the table, even if you swing..it's off the table.

FWIW, this is the rule we have disagreed about the most.
