Phillips may not be the dummy you all think: A defense of B. Phillips...

Pretty solid read.
Pretty solid read.
quote:
Last season, when he posted a paltry .306 OBP -- his worst in his nine years in Cincy -- it was still better than the average National League second baseman. Of the 11 NL second basemen who compiled at least 400 PA last season, Emilio Bonifacio, Kolten Wong, Aaron Hill and Jedd Gyorko all posted worse OBP's than did Phillips. In other words, while Phillips isn't the OBP messiah, he's far from a pariah.
quote:
It shows that you can have a pretty great major-league career without being willing or able to realize an above-average OBP.
quote:
Going back to Phillips' time frame, he's been one of the best second basemen in the game since coming of age with Cincy. Since he arrived in the Queen City in 2006, he's been the sixth-best second baseman in the game, and second-best in the NL. Unfortunately for him, the five players ahead of him on the list -- Chase Utley, Robinson Cano, Dustin Pedroia, Ben Zobrist and Ian Kinsler -- are either sabermetric darlings or just out and out loved by everyone. And all of them have a much higher OBP. Phillips makes his mark with the leather. Only Utley, Pedroia and Nick Punto have been more valuable defensively at the keystone in that span than has Phillips.

He may make more than all of them combined?

Your slugging better be through the freaking roof, or be playing elite defense.

How are they defining "nth-best second baseman"?

Each stat of his slash has gone down for 3 consecutive years. Its not that he never was a good player, no one thinks that. Its that his hitting has steady declined at a decent clip for 3 years straight. His defense can only mask that for so long. Also he throws a fit about not hitting at the top of the order. Contrary to Dusty Baker, you can't have a .310 OBP guy hitting 2nd.

Oh, I'm not saying he's terrible. I just chuckle at defending him by saying HEY, THERE'S WORSE GUYS OUT THERE!!! like the article did.

It seems like Dusty Baker is always doing something incredibly fricking stupid and illogical. He's the anti-Joe Maddon.

I'm convinced every time a reliever is overused, Joe Torre adds another year to his life.

Seems like the Cubs and Reds both fared okay with Dusty at the helm.

Dusty was given a legit title contender and didn't do much.
FWIW while there is concrete evidence that your highest OBP guys should go at the top of the lineup and high slugging guys should go around 4. Lineup construction actually has a relatively small outcome on wins. In best seasons if you make a perfect lineup every game it will maybe make 2 wins a year v a random lineup. But still just to fly in the face of proven convention is aggrevating. I think lineup position has a greater effect phycologically.

Brandon is dumb because he basically said getting on base is something he doesn't try to do. That's fricking dumb.

As a Cardinals fan, I can fully get on board our creed of "F*#@ PHILLIPS!!"

I put 100% of game 6 against the marlins on his shoulders. And for that, he should be publicly shamed.

I thought this thread was going to be about Bum Phillips.

Or even worse, a guy with an OBP and his shitty slugging pct, hitting third, which is going to happen this year.
This article is BS. Phillips has had a very good career, but he is getting paid too much not the downslope of it (not his fault) and is ungrateful that his contract is less than Votto's (completely his fault). Not only were his comments a few days ago stupid but he also took a shot at one of his teammates (who has supported him in interviews over and over again throughout the years). I'm a Phillips fan but his comments were total BS.

His last healthy season, he still put up .491 which isn't terrible.

He played 151 games 2013 with a .396 Slugging .... not sure where .491 came for Phillips since he has never slugged .491 in his career

Dusty was my man. But I still long for the days of Lou Pinella and Rob Dibble fighting in the clubhouse.

Unless I miss read the post, the poster was talking about Joey Votto.
