According to Baseball America's Aaron Fitt, the Phillies turned Oregon State left-hander Ben Wetzler in to the NCAA after he declined to sign as their fifth round pick in last summer's draft and returned to school for his senior season.

quote:

Fitt says the Phillies also tried to turn in sixth rounder Jason Monda, an outfielder/first baseman who declined to sign and returned to Washington State.
quote:

The NCAA has not yet ruled on Wetzler's case, which has been pending since November.

The NCAA rules really seem to be at odds with MLB draft rules here imo. If a kid is truly conflicted about whether to go to college or sign, why do you penalize the kid for accessing an agent and trying to get good counsel/representation? Do they want 18 year old kids negotiating with MLB teams on their own?

Sounds pretty pathetic and petty coming from the Phillies. Why should they give a frick?

Also, why can't baseball players have agents? football players can have an agent heading into their draft. Shouldn't baseball players be afforded the same?

How to you try to turn someone in? Either they did turn information over to the NCAA or they didn't.

The difference is that football and basketball can't be drafted out of HS. Baseball can. It's a bad comparison.

So these 17 year old kids who are deciding on their life's fate as far as baseball goes should have no representation against the billion dollar baseball industry?

They also make a decision to declare for the draft(at least the underclassmen that would still have eligibility). HS baseball kids make no such decision.

It isn't a comparison it is the NCAA rule for all sports. With regard to point about being drafted out of high school, I don't understand what that has to do with Wetzler, a senior, who is in the same position as any other junior who was drafted

That's a problem though. The baseball draft is completely different from the other two. Teams will draft kids that are still in school and try to woo them away. The kids made no previous commitment to enter the draft like the football and basketball kids.

The comment about high school seniors isn't relevant to this specific case (I should have made that clear in the OP) but it's the consequences of the rule, and it's stupid. Doesn't the NCAA say in their commercials that they exist to support the student-athletes? How would forcing uncounseled decisions be in the best interest of the kid?

thats the part im having a hard time wrapping my head around. "sure you can go negotiate with a team, you just cant use expert advisors when sorting out your future and being leaned on by a billion dollar pro team and a university."

The NCAA is a blight to non-olympic sports.

It sounds like their Pacific NW scout got pissed that he couldn't close the deal on a couple guys he convinced the club to draft early and decided to be a bitch about it.

I can guaran-damn-tee you that I would not be cooperative with the Phillies if I were a HS or underclass draftee by them this year.

Yeah if I was even close to being on the fence about my decision, I'd tell Philly to not even bother calling me.

Maybe they are protecting their interest in having the negotiating leverage. Last thing any MLB team(or any one in their negotiating position) wants is these kids to have proper representation.

It's simply best for them.
