If you don't believe E-Sports is surging upwards, perhaps this will make you a believer. Along with the likes of Shaq, and other celebrities who have endorsed E-Sports, now full on teams are getting into the mix... You can read more at the link below:

76ers Acquire Team Dignitas/Apex
quote:

The combined organizations will create a powerhouse competitor in the booming business of eSports; bringing under one roof Team Apex’s wildly popular League of Legends team with other standout games including Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm and Smite. This marks the first time an ownership group of a North American sports franchise has acquired an eSports team; the group will utilize their business expertise and vast resources to bring infrastructure and alignment to position these eSports teams for future growth. The Sixers intend to manage the day-to-day operations of Team Dignitas, sharing best practices in sponsorship, sales, branding, digital marketing, merchandising, publicity and more; as well as devote resources to player recruitment, development and wellness.

E-sports is the next big thing in America. Networks like TBS already broadcast championships. As a casual CS:GO and Overwatch player, I can tell you little pre-teen shits look up to this pro players like we do professional athletes. They try and emulate their play in pug as much as possible, most of the time making a competitive match unbearable.

I had no idea this was a thing until a couple of months ago when I heard a radio show on satellite. More power to guys making a living on this, good for them. But, going to an arena to watch dudes play video games = for me.

I just wish it wasn't for such terrible games, like that League of Legends stuff.

In a perfect world, sports games would be this big. If only...especially back in my hayday.

I agree, especially when it is broadcast for free online, but I have a feeling that will all change soon. It's actually pretty cool to watch online and the commentators are legit.

Again, I'm just going on my sensibilities, not saying a Madden League(even if it could conceivably work out in a fictional scenario) would be as popular as a League of Legends league.

I know I am in the minority in the gaming community but watching MOBAs is freaking boring.

Now Counter Strike, Evolve, Overwatch, StarCraft, etc, I can get behind a little. I do watch on twitch.

Sports game tournaments are fun to watch too.

It will never stop growing because of the population and technology advancing but it will always be a niche sport in this country.

It's different because basketball is a real sport?

I love video games but the answer here is obvious. One is people playing a sport and one is people playing a video game.
