I'm not about quelling free speech, but I agree these idiots need to shut up and let the university fix this crap. The more they set up tents, the worse it looks, regardless if whether or not it's just a few people.

Free speech or not its just the wise thing to do right now. Idk which Penn St. person it was on this board that said it, or someone who knew a bunch of PSU alums, but they ( the PSU alums) were talking about how they need to just put their allegiance to football on the back burner for awhile. This is clearly the exact opposite of that. Maybe stand on the streets and preach about child molestation crimes or something, anything but this.

I hope some of those comments were written before this whole thing came to light.

the 40 for 40 you mean?

ETA: If you guys haven't seen the PBS interview the NCAA Pres Mark whatshisname did with Tavis Smiley you should find it. The NCAA president says this is unlike any case EVER before the NCAA and past precedent may not be enough punishment. They will wait for all of the proceedings to get all of the information and evaluate what violations PSU commited.

He sounded as if they'd get hit hard, but his words seem more like an out.

Agreed. This is not reflective of the whole PSU community. But, I guess its easy to go with the crowd, and say it is.

I still find it ridiculous that college students are so caught up in preserving the JoePa they "knew".

First off...they're dumb and usually drunk college kids...this isn't the alumni folks.

Second, it's pretty pathetic that if you support anything JoePa did or meant to that University during his 61 years...you are branded Pro-pedophilia...give me a break...what a cop out way to think about things. It's like if you think woman should be able to control their pregnancy...the Pro-lifers label you a fan of murdering babies and nothing else. As if there aren't other considerations.

It's sensationalizing everything to extreme black and white degrees. That's not life...the people who have made Penn State their life...their relationship to that University and JoePa is more complicated.

They should have a story on the Joe those four boys "knew".

You know the one that didn't care they got raped.

PSU fans, alumni, backers should all seriously just shut up. Even Tom Morrow, you seem legit and reasonable. But it still comes off as protective of a university that right now seems nothing less than deserving of the name Pedo State.

Saying nothing is better than trying to explain this even slightly.

I've heard it argued this could have happened anywhere. But I don't think so. I think just about the only place this could have happened was Penn State. And that's just an indictment on the whole school.

You guys have chosen to label yourselves the people that do it the right way and all of you bought into it and because of that the people at the top of your organization chose perception over reality.

Best thing to do is just STFU.

BTW Z, its only complicated cuz you guys make it complicated. No one else thinks it complicated cuz no one else has idolized and put Paterno on a pedestal like you did and still do. You think he's the only person to do good things and then fall from grace. Good Freakin Lord Almighty take me now. It's complicated?
HOLY frick MAN HE AIDED A CHILD RAPIST!
WHAT IS frickING COMPLICATED ABOUT THAT?
I bet you didn't even know him. Why do you even idolize him? Because of Football? And because he donated money to the U? shite PSU is rolling in it, it probably isn't even in the top 150 donors in the last 50 years at PSU.

What's next? What if Bill Gates turns out to be a serial murderer? You gonna say its complicated cuz he donated a BILLION dollars to AIDS research in Africa?

not standing out in front of the statue, but i have been pretty surprised by the number of alumni and fans that are old enough to know better that have posted on message boards taking "the freeh report is a sham" position.

if you want to talk about the good paterno did, i suppose there's a place for that at some point, but what really surprises me is the vehemence with which some of these people insist he either acted appropriately or is the victim of some kind of witch hunt.

obviously it's a vocal minority, but it really honestly seems to be much larger than i think anyone would have anticipated.

this is a prime example of the truth being stranger than fiction.....

but it validates the point i've been bringing up all along and lsugrrrl so very well explained the other night on the penn state identity being so wrapped up in joe paterno....

the only way to break the cult is the death penalty...

After reading all of those, I can't begin to really analyze them. In my uneducated in psychology opinion, these people are in so much shock that these stories are ways of healing. If you notice, they are all personal stories about how he made an impact on their lives in a positive way. Of course it doesn't excuse any of his failures in this scandal, but it's their way of coping. Honestly I have no idea why they are posting those stories and I have none of my own to try and relate it to.

In slight defense of the people who wrote those stories, I think they were originally posted the day Paterno died. Why they are being reposted now is beyond me...

And? Care to elaborate on your opinion that is the minority opinion around the country?

Nice laughing emoticon. So the PSU defender is laughing at those who hold my opinion of disgust now?

Interesting. Based upon the responses so far I'd have to say I didn't see that coming.
Well played sir lemming, well played.

I'm going to bed before you idiots really get me going.

People I know that before the Freesh report released were against the Death Penalty, now they are all for it.
I am also appalled at the attitude form the PSU students. Personally i feel the dp is needed I also feel they need to raze the locker room, I hate PSU now more than ever, I always felt JoePa was a rat, always preaching etc.

I do it the right way, but I've never been condescending or even made that kind of statement. And I won't STFU because for every idiot fanatic of PSU, there are reasonable ones like me that will continue to try and salvage what little image still exists. And don't misunderstand that this will always be about the victims first, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be concerned with how my degree is viewed by others. I've actually seen people posting that they are HR reps with fortune 500 successful businesses and if they see a resume with PSU as the school, they toss it. While I'm pretty sure it was just someone being an idiot, this is the type of crap I've seen at the other end of this spectrum.
