Pablo Sandoval Has Been Benched

It's gonna be tough to work the weight off sitting on the pine.
Deadspin
Shaw was on a tear last year, but that's pretty damning on Sandoval to get big money and lose the spot the next year. I wonder if the Sox will flip him and eat a ton of the contract or just see if Shaw can keep it up for a whole year and DFA Sandoval at the end of it.

Flip him for Shields and eat a ton of his contract

This could easily happen. I'm not a huge Shields fan, but I'd do everything I could to make this happen if I'm Boston.

That last offseason for Cherington...woof

Yeah, it hasn't been pretty. I still think a majority of those decisions came from Luccino, but Hanley better hit this year.

Red Sox would probably have to include a prospect as well to even get the talks some traction. Pablo has more remaining money than Shields and less value.

How much money is he still owed?

signed a five-year, $95 million contract before last season.

Rusney Castillo to fifth-outfielder status, even though he signed a seven-year, $72.5 million contract in August 2014

A lot.
The guy should be embarrassed. It's one thing for skills to erode because of injury/passage of time, but the guy just stopped caring apparently.

He has no incentive to car. He's getting paid regardless and he's not a hof level player so he's not worried about endorsements or legacies

Only has 3 years and 63 million left (2 million buyout for 4th year) I think the Red Sox would love to flip Pablo and eat his contract for a player who only has 3 years and would provide them something.
If nothing else they get a solid 200 innings from Shields (something only Price is going to do) and they would get value as a #4 or 5 starter, even though he is paid like a #1 or 2

That's most baseball players though.
Personally, I think he's a lot like Carl Crawford. He's a player who's skill set won't age well and cannot deal with the scrutiny of the awfulness that is the Boston media.

I'm sure some owner will use him as The example as to why guaranteed contracts should be removed.

The baseball player's union is awesome, so it won't really matter.
Plus owners have been putting in injury clauses, so while the total value is guaranteed, the player may have to play at a bargain basement discount the final year.

cool.
The SF Giants would take him back if Boston eats most of his salary for the first year. They would put him back on his diet.
