I think SFP made a thread about A&M awhile ago but I'm curious for the MSB's opinions on the Vols?

Dooley was a terrible hire. Looks like he might get fired soon.

Recruiting classes seem to be average by SEC standards and there is no in-state recruiting base. Why can't they attract players nationally ?

Do they try for a "homerun" hire this time around? Would a high profile guy even take that job? (Not sure its even a top 20 position these days)

Sustained prominence, no.

They would absolutely have to have a HR hire, ala Gruden. The things that made them a power are largely no longer applicable and they've been passed up.

Because Dooley is a terrible recruiter and an even worse coach. Neither Fulmer or Kiffin had any issue landing elite OOS players.

Tennessee needs to hire a great recruiter who can pull in top 5 classes even with mediocre seasons (see Jimbo Fisher). Then fire him in about 3 years and hire someone who will have a team stacked with talent poised to make a run at a title in a year or two after that. Kiffin honestly could have been that guy if he hadn't bolted (assuming he didn't get them put on probation).

Dooley is both a terrible coach and an average recruiter.

First and foremost, get rid of Dooley. But they need a Homerun hire, no question.

I think they can. Tennessee really isn't that different from Oklahoma. Oklahoma has no in-state recruiting base either and relies heavily on Texas for recruiting. The state of Tennessee might not have any in-state talent but they border a bunch of states that do (Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi) and their location is attractive. OTOH, Nebraska has nothing going for them. They're stuck in the middle of nowhere and isn't located in a warm weather state. I don't think they'll ever regain the prominence that they once had.

Plus, they do have Memphis. And those border states lack a big instate power. I don't get those who say you can't recruit at Tennessee, I think their base is better than people give it credit for.

I didn't think Dooley was a terrible hire at the time, but he's been unable to pull the program out of the Kiffin tailspin.

I think Kiffin is a jackass but I think UT could have become a SEC power again with him.

lol no,almost all of the players he brought in are now gone, thus the situation they're in right now.

And he still hasn't proved he can win.he's a fine qb coach, but that's about it.

See Gene Chizik at Auburn for example, sure the classes have been ranked great, but the players haven't panned out and a bunch have been kicked off the team.

Same thing happened with the recruits Kiffin brought in at Tennessee, the Vols pretty much didn't have a 2009 recruiting class, and nevermind the NCAA all over the place during his one year.

what's the prevailing attitude like in Knoxville nowdays. Who will the Vols pursue if they let go of Dooley?

But Kiffin would have found a way to keep a lot of those players on the team.

Dooley has had three years now and he's bringing in mediocre classes and should have at least built some depth by now.

Of course you have the Gruden clowns, but I've heard Charlie Strong and Peterson at Boise, they want a proven head coach, and they will pay whatever to get him..
