One of my family friends (Lafayette area) has a son in high school that collapsed during soccer practice in June due to 'athlete's heart'. He probably would not have survived if it weren't for the AED that his school had just received about a month before (unrelated but someone mentioned that John Bel Edwards was trying to get them in every school).

I had never heard of 'athlete's heart' but (I think) it's a gradual thickening due to frequent playing of endurance sports like soccer. Apparently, this kid's thickening has gone back to normal over the past month and he may be able to play again at some point.

Also made me wonder if that's the same think Pete Maravich had when he died or if it was something different.

It's usually a genetic problem.

12 a year die from football. 20 a year die from cattle (bulls and just getting crushed in a pen by a cow).
This gets out toward sjw if you mandate a test that only maps to 15 people out of 1 million

It's usually an undetected genetic abnormality. It can usually be managed through Meds and lifestyle changes.

Your friend's kid sounds like his enlarged and went away. That is usually indicative of a virus that causes enlargement and then sometimes the heart goes back to normal.

Wikipedia describes athlete's heart as something that can happen with anyone that participates in intensive, prolonged endurance activity. It's usually not an issue that causes problems (if I understand correctly).

I'm not sure if my friend had an underlying issue that athlete's heart was 'hiding' (as Wikipedia mentions).

I had never heard of athlete's heart until last week so I'm definitely no expert.
