Oregon set the decibel record last Saturday

at least according to Wikipedia
quote:

Autzen is renowned for its crowd noise. On October 27, 2007, a record 59,277 fans watched the Ducks defeat the USC Trojans 24-17, and in the process, the crowd set a national record for the highest recorded decibel level at any sporting event in history: 127.2 decibels (louder than a jet taking off). The previous record was at Memorial Stadium, Clemson at 126 decibels.

all that noise we made in that Florida game and we couldn't even beat out Death Valley lite?

Our stadium isn't good for acoustics apparently... but I think we sustain the volume better than anyone.

Do they actually measure decibel levels at EVERY college football game? Seems to me that they just told everyone in the stadium that they were trying to set a noise record, so scream like your daddy was about to stick it in your butt.

Of course not... but if ESPN was there, someone probably had a decibel meter.

Possibly the case.

how many fans do you think scream at any given snap at an LSU game. Lets say its 3rd and 4 v. another top 5 team and the game is tied or we are down in the 4th quarter. out of 94 i would say 60-70 maybe?

imagine if it was all 94...

didn't the decibel thing that they had on TV for the Florida game read like 115 or something (didn't see the game but i remember seeing a snapshot of it)? Clemson's previous record pwns that

No clue... don't remember seeing that. I was pretty drunk though.

I'm sure if it was announced that we were trying to set a record, the LSU crowd could get pretty freaking loud... enough to come close or break those records.

That's the key..not saying TS gets as loud or what not....but anyone can put info on anything...some time awhile back they even noticed the clemson "record" was just random info put in....might have to find more reliable source on that one.

for the Florida game was the first time i have ever seen everyone standing up at the beginning of the game but the noise level wasn't insane until they announced that USC lost

I'm sure their procedure is very scientific, including of course a

1.) Background measurements
2.) Decibel readings at multiple points of the stadium simultaneously
3.) Using an instrument calibrated by standards previous to use, etc., etc., etc.

You would almost need instruments installed all over the stadium including in the middle of the field recording simultaneously over a long period of time to get the information you need for an accurate reading especially if they're going to report that a difference of 1.2 decibels (127.2 compared to 126) is a significant difference that is outside of standard error and therefore dictates a record-breaking event.

that reading was taken from the first row of the student section. Of course it is loud there.

Yeah, your way would be the most accurate....but they probably just reported the LOUDEST reading in the stadium....probably just some dude with a decibel meter walking around. I doubt it was very scientific.

They probably piped in some noise. No way it 60,000 people made that much noise. We're still better.

We are talking noise not making the ground shake by jumping up and down.

Actually the earthquake game is somewhat overrated. The geol teacher at LSU told me that the seismograph thingy would go off every time a truck would pass by.
