"Our administration needs to take more responsibility to fully exploit the opportunity that our athletic department provides -- on behalf of our students, our faculty and our institution," Howard told members.

They are frustrated because the athletic department always seems to spend exactly what it makes, especially when it's pulling in so much money. As pointed out by USA Today, Oregon's athletic department is the wealthiest in the nation.

Harbaugh and Howard feel the entire difference of the department's revenue and expenses were just given back to the coaches and athletic director Rob Mullen as year-end raises (though, The Oregonian's Andrew Greif presented a different way of looking at some of those numbers last month). "It would be really good if we were all in this together and the athletic department was trying to help the rest of the university," Harbaugh said.

Not sharing the wealth has the academics pissy.

Gotta use those profits to make all those new uniforms. Sorry, academics.

What's the point of being affiliated with the university if it isn't giving money back?

Agreed. There's got to be some compromise...you've got to set some sort of formal "contribution" plan if X money is made or something similar.

On the other side, the fringe, non monetary benefits the university is getting from the athletic department which is harder if not impossible to track is probably quite substantial.

I would venture to say that more than half of the D1 football programs in the country take money from student fees to support their program instead of the other way around.

There aren't but a handful of AD's in the country that make a profit, so of course most don't give any back to the university.

Well, this is where I think a lot of the stats about most athletic departments being in the red is a joke. For instance, I thought it was Texas or LSU where people were saying they had a perfectly good tennis center and decided to build another ridiculous one, anyway, just to spend the money. I don't known when the facilities arms race ends, but I guess if donor money is there and/or the major sports earn enough to spend it, it doesn't matter that much.

LSU does not take a dime from the State to run its athletic programs. It has also given substantial amounts of money each school year to the general fund of LSU & has for years. Any new athletic facilities are funded 100% by donations from the booster organization TAF or other outside the university doners. It is also one of the very few athletic departments in Div. 1 that operates in the black.

Exactly.

How many people in Canada would know about LSU if it wasn't for our football team?

Just tell NIKE to give cash to the accounting departments rather than the athletic department.

Typical left coast Libs. Fill a stadium to watch your lectures and then you'll get paid more.

Except LSU athletics department actually gives millions to the university yearly.

LSU is the exception

Exactly. They should feel fortunate the athletics program isn't costing the school money (remember, that by breaking even, ALL sports are fully funded, not just the majors).

I had a professor at Auburn a couple semesters ago complaining how they're putting so much money into upgrading athletic facilities but nothing for academic buildings.. I kindly raised my hand, told him we have separate budgets which are totally unrelated, and everything Auburn does athletically is from what they've raised themselves. He proceeded to shut up and turn red in the face

The academics at The University of Texas have similar qualms.

However, the UT athletics department gives $5 million of its $15 million yearly share from the Longhorn Network back to the academic side.

UT takes a lot of heat for spending as much as they make, but they have a $40 million cash reserve, and Oregon has Phil Knight.

Phil has donated a ton to the university. Oregon politics suck and most people have their heads up their arse.

It's a HUGE (the largest they have) marketing arm for the university. This should be obvious.

Which is why I said it's stupid when people feel "more is not enough" about how much is given to the academic side

And? Doesn't explain why a surplus of money shouldn't be distributed in part to the university with which it's affiliated. Especially for programs that typically turn a profit. It's not going to hurt that athletic department, which is secondary to education at the school.

It is only stupid because LSU's AD actually does give a bunch to the University. If Alleva and crew were closing the books by giving themselves raises , people would be livid.
