On this day in history, Mike Tyson bit off a chunk of Evander Holyfield's ear

On June 28, 1997 Iron Mike didn't like the direction the fight with Evander was heading, and DQ'd himself by biting off a chunk of ear cartilage. Was this an example of roid rage, or Mike's version of a temper tantrum a la "taking your ear and going home"?

All these years later, though, I have got to tip my cap to Tyson...he seems...rather normal.

Listen, I get the hungry angle, but surely the nose or some cheek tastes better than ear.

My greatest sports prediction of all time. I hosted a watch party at my house, and in front of everyone there I predicted that "something weird is going to happen, like a disqualification" when asked my thoughts on the fight.

Holyfield beat the crap out of Mike the first time around. If it started to happen again, I just figured Mike would find a way to retreat and go home.

But biting a chunk out of Holyfield's ear? I would NEVER have guessed that shite. That was almost too left-field for even someone like Tyson.

We ppv'd it as well...I had a similar feeling as you. The time they had fought before, Holyfield really landed a lot of good punches on Tyson, and you just had the feeling he would NOT let that happen again...I could see some groin punches to DQ himself, but, bite an ear off??? That's savage shite.

Tyson freaked out when Holyfield was headbutting him and getting away with it.

Yup, and he let his anger get the best of him.

That fight is one of the most surreal, weird things I've ever witnessed happen. It was like watching poorly-scripted reality TV, except it was real.

Well I guess we should ask him why he let Holyfield get away with the headbutting...
