I'm a huge HOF dork, but man... I could not give less of a shite whether a guy gets 100% of the vote. It matters not at all. Bob Gibson got 84%. Anyone think he isn't f'n awesome?

Yeah you can't get 600 people to agree that today is Wednesday. Nobody is ever going to get 100%. I just hope Maddux breaks Tom Seavers vote percentage record. It's like 98 point something %

This election should help a bit with the backlog, and we won't have the embarrassment of an induction ceremony with no living players again.
Honestly, for all of the talk of reform, I think they can solve a lot of issues with one kind of simple reform:
Keep voting is exactly the same with the 75% threshold. However, if no player clears 75%, then the top vote getter earns induction. I'd also consider saying that if only one player was inducted the previous year, then the next year we induct at least two players, the top two vote getters.
That would prevent this huge backlog of deserving candidates and avoid not inducting anyone which is A) bad for business and B) kind of indefensible anyway given the number of candidates. Also, at minimum, three players would get inducted every two years, which is still less than the historic average.

Agreed.
The problem is that the MLB voters love to get up on their soapboxes to attention-whore rather than just vote for someone who deserves it.
"I'm turning in a blank ballot because Pete Rose isn't eligible!"
"I'm not voting for Maddox because Jack Morris isn't in yet!"
"I'm not voting for Albert Belle because he told me to frick myself for writing ugly stories about him!"
NBA MVP voters aren't much better, given that some asshat always has to cast a dissenting vote so that Shaq or LeBron doesn't become the first player to become a unanimous MVP.
And it's not because the guy they vote for is deserving, either, it's a blatant attention-whoring tactic on behalf of the voter.

Overhauling the list of voters would probably help more than this.
There are a lot of voters stuck in the past who hate the voters who use sabermetrics to push a candidate as well as hating pretty much any player who started in the 80s or beyond.
Culling a lot of these guys would probably go a long way to fixing things while still keeping the 75% of ballots requirement in place.

I'm not really a fan of mandatory induction numbers. I'm just scared the stars will align and someone who really doesn't deserve to get in, makes it. Maybe if no one gets in then they could have a revote with only the top candidate, or move to some sort of selection committee to deem their worthiness.

I know. But its the reasons given by the BBWA that are so mind numbingly agitating to me.
I hate the Yankees. That being said, Mariano Rivera should be a unanimous first ballot guy, but he wont be. There will be one of two writers that will give some lame excuse about why he doesn't deserve to be in on first ballot, etc. Its the same thing with Greg Maddux.
