The tour got underway today with a 117 mi flat stage from Mont Saint Michel to Utah Beach... which British speedster Mark Cavendish won on a sprint finish to take yellow after day 1

Hopefully Cav can finally threaten Peter Sagan's tight grasp on the green jersey competition

Sunday's stage 2 is from Saint Lo to Cherbourg en Contentin... 113 miles with 3 category 4 (easiest class of climb) climbs all within the first 40km or so... and ends with a cat. 3 climb right before the finish

ETA: also, Alberto Contador was involved in a crash today and had what looked like a good lil cut on his shoulder... should be ok to continue but we'll see in the morning

So happy Cav got the win!

Nobody will challenge Sagan for green, maybe a peak Gilbert 5 years ago could have, but he just picks up points on too many stages.

As always can't wait for the fireworks in the last week but my evenings after work are set for the next 22 days

Great finish to stage 1, though I'm surprised Sagan got caught

Contador fell on the same shoulder again today. Dude is going to need a new right arm before stage 3.

Teejay is officially the leader of Team BMC

an American leading an American team

sucks for Porte that it was a flat tire right at the start of the last climb that did him in

Spare a thought for Stuyven. So close to leading the entire way, but glad Sagan got a stage win.

Sagan is just incredible. He seems to do anything he wants on a bike and does it well.

Contador has the worst luck in TdF lately.

ehh... he gets a polka dot jersey

I know yellow was the goal... but polka dot isn't a bad consolation prize

Oh I'm well aware. Just to have gotten within the last 500 meters and they FINALLY caught him. I'd still be a bit bummed.

Monday's stage 3 runs from Granville to Angers (138 miles)... a day for the sprinters to play with only a single cat. 4 climb very early in the stage (within the first 20-25 km)

bunch sprint finish... here we come

I know... I'm sure he'll still be very happy to pull on 1 of the main prizes in the TdF... and looking at the profile he should definitely hold it to Wednesday if not all the way to next weekend

ETA: Sagan should definitely hold yellow to at least Wednesday... Stage 5 has 2 cat. 3s and 2 cat. 2s all within the last 20 km or so... with another cat. 3 about 15 km before that

Will Sagan's yellow jersey have the WC stripes on it?

Happy for Tejay, but he's saying he's still co-leader with Porte

quote:

Porte skipped his post-race spin duties and talked to the media, calling the stage a disaster and agreeing that the two-pronged leadership dynamic may have shifted. Van Garderen, however, was not having any such talk and looked to pick his teammate up.

"I think that's a kneejerk reaction on his part. I still see us as co-leaders and equals and he will still be getting support on the road. He just needs to stay positive."

no but his shorts still have the world champion strips on them

Cavendish wins stage 3 by the tiniest of margins and retakes the lead in the green jersey competition... all other jerseys remain the same

Tuesday's stage 4 is another sprinter's playground... a 148 mile run from Saumur to Limoges

only 1 cat. 4 climb is there to slow down the peloton about 30-35 km to the finish line

I'd say expect another bunch sprint to the finish with only the green jersey in danger of switching hands again

think today's stage was even closer than yesterday's... amazing sprint to the line as Kittel got the win by about a spoke

finally get some mountains in play on stage 5 Wednesday... 134 miles from Limoges to Le Lioran

1 cat. 4 climb... 3 cat. 3 climbs and 2 cat. 2 climbs

you could expect the battle of the climbers to starts on the 1st cat. 2 climb... Pas de Peyrol... which takes the peloton to its highest heights of the day at just over 5,200 feet

then a quick descent right to the start of the cat. 2 Col du Perthus... before another quick descent to start Col de Font du Cere and a mountain top finish

this is just a tune up before the Pyrenees Mountains begin on Friday

saw stage 2 as more his profile... figure this 1 might be a hill too far... but I'm probably wrong

ETA:esp. w/ 5 categorized climbs (all either 3s or 2s) within the last 70 km or so
