So you think teams shouldn't hold on to young pitching talent? I don't understand

Not if someone is willing to give up a ~4 win 28 year old bat, especially when its CF with 5 years of control at insanely cheap prices.

The hit rate for pitching prospects is a lot lower than hitting ones.

That's a lot of qualifiers but okay. I still think they would have been much better suited to go hard after signing Fowler and keeping Giolito but whatever

Think about it this way, Eaton is a 4 win player NOW. The risk of him not being a 4 win player are pretty low. The odds of a pitching. Prospect ever being a 4 win player are pretty low, especially pitchers.

Fowler will cost twice as much and is two years older.

Eaton has never been a 4 win player as a CF, so I'd say the odds of him not being a 4 win player are at least decent.

They're set up for a pretty rough rebuild in 4 years or so

Maybe so, but in the mean time they are a legit WS contender and that is the point of pro sports.

Eaton is a very nice pick-up for the Nats.

You dumb.

Also -- this labeling players by their wins is the dumbest mother fricking trend in the universe.

That isn't an anti-metrics stance. I believe in them aiding the process.

But Christ. It's so arbitrary and incomplete to say a guy is an X game winner.

I was thinking this yesterday. This deal now cements it. Giolito was the only thing keeping the Nats farm system from being bottom 10. Rizzo is a self described "win now" GM. Their recipe is unsustainable. I actually think it will be less than 4 years.

Never said he wasn't, I just think they dealt way too much to get him.

I understand it, if trading had been as analytical back in the day the Tigers grabbing Might and Dontrelle may have been seen differently. The Tigers essentially gave up 2 of their top 10 and more from their top 20 in the farm system at the time I believe.

I went back a few years to 2011 to pull the top pitching prospects from BA's top 20 prospects.

Julio Tehran
Hellickson
Taillon
Shelby Miller
Matt Moore
Pineda
Mìke Montegomery
Chris Sale

To me they are where the Braves were from 2010-13. They will win 90+ games but not a threat to do much more.

It's not arbitrary and it's the opposite of incomplete.

Look it's an easy way to refer to a player and in trade discussion I think it's a quick and dirty estimate. It's better than saying he's a .300 hitter

You're speaking logically. There is no real logic in this.

Is it logical that Fowler will get 18-20 million a year? No.

Nothing is logical. It's just how crazy do you want to be.

How can something be a "quick and dirty estimate" while being the opposite of incomplete?

I get why it has value.

I just hate it. I'm throwing a tantrum about it. Let me do this.

Chicago White Sox

But my Reds:

What's the point in trading valuable pieces away, for younger pieces, only to trade them when they become valuable? Are we going to perpetually plan for the future? What a CF.

The Nats look good with Eaton; I'm not crazy about what they gave up, and to who, but if Eaton can give four wins in CF, or even 3.5, it will pay off. We've all seen what the Nats have done....
