For example, south Florida, greater Atlanta, Louisiana, Texas.....

Surely it's not just nature is it? It's got to be the extreme competitiveness of urban environments..... Or is it? Are these same qualities found in the plains of Texas?

Is there that much of a difference between coaches in different parts of the country?

Before you tell me it's because that's where black people are from, let me say that not all high density black population centers are known for finding players.

What chall thank?

Well certain parts of country emphasize football more than other sports (Texas, the South, Ohio). Unsurprisingly, those tend to be the "recruiting" hot spots.

this, plus focus on football relative to other sports. Bigger cities in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast tend to produce more basketball players, for example.

Is there one high density (black) population center in the south that doesn't produce a significant number of great football players?

Miami, New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta all produce a ton of great football players

The south (and West) have a lot more "space" comparatively than the big population centers in the north (NYC, Chicago, Detroit, Philly). Couple that with warm weather almost year round, and you start to produce more football players.

There may be more black kids in Chicago than NOLA. However, when you realize that many live in very densely populated communities in a climate more conducive to indoor sports (basketball), you see why NOLA puts out more football players per capita.

It's difficult to be a good football player when you have no room to play/practice and it's too damn cold to do so even if you wanted to.

I mean New York city is rather huge.

Oakland and Minneapolis are top 50 US cities by population.

Im sure most of the recruiting hot pockets in those cities have a good bit of blacks, esp NYC and Oakland.

Never really considered Minneapolis as a recruiting hot spot

Yeah, it goes back to weather apparently. Weather and desire for youth to play. Obviously you must have the right genes.

Thanks.

If you are referring to metropolises in the Midwest and along the northern Atlantic seaboard then I would infer that the reason for the lack of top-flight talent is mostly attributed to the weather. Other posters have alluded to this with their mention of sport-specific focus in various regions. Well, in those particular regions of the country the sport that receives the greatest amount of attention is typically basketball.

You can play basketball 365 days/year. Why? Because it's predominantly an indoor sport. There are gymnasiums all throughout these major cities that offer athletes the ability to play regardless of the weather. The same cannot be said about football.

It's hard to motivate kids to stay focused on football when there are annual blizzards and freezing temperatures that make a number of outdoor activities unappealing for several months out of the year. That's not a knock on black athletes either. Hell, I sure as shite wouldn't want to play or practice for football when the temperature is dipping down into the low teens. I would much prefer the confines of a warm, temperature-regulated gym.

Also, MSP has a percentage of black population lower than the national percentage of black population so I really don't know why we're even taking about that place here.

When a high schooler is 5ft 9inches and a star track athlete, can play guard at the college level and dunk on your arse, is good enough to make the baseball roster in college, but is a stud rb/db/return man/slot wr.....! Thats the deep south. Thats nature. Westcoast and most other areas are over nurtured. Im from La but lived in cali and north tex. There's no comparison.

You say they are over-nurtured but I think you meant they are sheltered and stuff right?

It's both, and the "plains of Texas" is misleading. D/FW and Houston metros are top 5 population centers. Some very large, rich 'burbs who spend an alarming amount to have a competitive football team.

Has over 2 million black residents more than double any other city in the United States.

Last year they had same number of NFL players (3)as did Newman High School and the Matthew's family.

Have y'all visited NYC lately? There isn't exactly a lot of room for football fields for the schools here.

Minneapolis is not dense nor does it have many black people. It's probably the whitest city in the Midwest, and definitely has less blacks than Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, etc.
