Looking at the committee in other NCAA sports, I don't see how anyone could prefer the BCS. It's like wanting the RPI with no checks on non-sensical results.

I'm all for getting rid of the BCS. If this ends up sucking worse, it'll be replaced too. So let's give it a shot and see how it goes.

I honestly don't think it will be worse than the current system. I just think the only real difference is there will be two extra games played. The system is still going to favor the big name programs. Alabama, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. and yes, even LSU will always be given preferential treatment.

I'm not so afraid of this. I'm afraid a media loved team like Boise State or Northern Illinois sneaks in again over a halfway decent team, then gets curb stomped in the semifinal matchup.

I'd rather have unbiased computers determining who gets into a playoff, rather than a 14-20 person committee...

This.

what makes you think the computers are unbiased? Who is programing them, what are the criteria? A committee will be known and can be held accountable.

did you HONESTLY hear one member of the media calling for NI to make the BCS? I sure as hell didn't...quite the opposite actually.

The selection committee will receive a "jury charge" from the commissioners. In ranking the teams, the committee will consider strength of schedule, where the games were played, conference championships and whether teams lost games because of injuries to key players.

I can't wait to see the leaps of logic these idiots make to put another team that beats three teams with a winning record in the regular season, finishes third in their conference, and loses their biggest home game of the season but still gets in the playoff.

Oh wait, we've already seen this.

Does this mean this committee will actually be honest about scheduling too?

Of course they will, if that means helping out a Brand team.

Face it, this is only going to make things worse than they are.

I can see it now, ever year:

Bracket one:

Third Place SEC (Bama) Vs Third Place Pac 12 (USC)

Bracket two:
ND (after beating two teams with a winning record) vs Ohio State (after waltzing through another daunting Big10 Schedule)

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Bwaaaahaaaaahaaaaaa

So, conference championships are borderline meaningless?

I think Wisconsin proved this year that sometimes they are.

Can't wait for the SEC to finish the season with three of four spots and have a team get left out. Even worse, have Bama, LSU, and A&M ranked 1,2,3. Bama wins conference, LSU only loss is to Bama, A&M loses close games at LSU and Bama. 4th is 2 loss Ohio St, 5th is ND. You think the selection committee leaves out A&M?

Sure, but the code is set in place before the season begins and it isn't subjective. It's a mathematical formula. Clearly they aren't perfect but they do not contain irrational bias (other than the methodology)

I kige this.

There should be a simple, transparent computer formula. That can be combined with a checklist of rules (like the BCS) that would be designed to prevent nonsensical results, ie FU over UGA this year.

Any system that tries to pick the top 4 out of 120 is going to have inherent flaws. But if it's a clear set of rules with no after the fact judgments, it's a better system. Any committee, or any poll, is going to inevitably be based on the brand names of the teams rather than the actual on the field results from the current season.

Do you think 2011 Arkansas would have made the playoffs with a selection committee? Keep in mind, the only teams they lost two were in the BCSNCG.

No conference championship games, play 2 less regular season games. Boom, make a 64 team tournament. Complete pipe dream but I'd love it if the could get this done.

Absolutely awful. Give me four conferences of 16 teams. Playoffs only have the conference champs

re: New 4 Team Playoff to have 14-20 Person Selection Committee
I really don't mind the idea of a committee. But the qualification for that would be they spell out the criteria for their decision making - and the criteria are designed to result in a legitimate national champion AND preserve or raise the value of college football as a whole.

For example, it makes sense to me for them to value winning your conference, but not every conference champ needs to be included (e.g. an 8-5 Wisconsin team should not be eligible for a NC when they lost a lot of games IMO) because sometimes that makes a lot of the games they played and lost less meaningful.

It would also make sense to me for the committee to consider including or include a highly regarded team that does not win its own conference. But including them should not come at the expense of a team that played a similar quality schedule and did win their conference. I think there should also be some "burden of proof" placed on those "runner-up" teams. Not only should they be very highly ranked but they should have played an outstanding out of conference opponent.

On the whole I think these kinds of criteria would be great for college football. They would value the regular season and provide incentives for outstanding teams to win their conference and play outstanding games out of conference - and those things are both more fair and more likely to maintain a nationally relevant sport than either just taking the top four conference champs or just taking the top four teams in a BCS poll.

Nope don't trust a committee. Let the bcs determine the top 4 teams and play a playoff

Yay! Back to the human bias that started the BCS to begin with

The human bias never left the process by which a NC is chosen. Polls are biased, computer formulas are biased. Bias is inescapable in sports like college football with large numbers of teams with unequal schedules.

The great advantage of the BCS wasn't eliminating bias. It was bypassing the old bowl obligations that prevented a consensus #1 from facing a consensus #2 even once in a season.

If you a team like UGA this year out because they lost the CCG and Florida who they beat in, because they didn't play in it, that's a problem.

For the most part I agree, but then again, Georgia had their shot and lost. Why should they continue on? If they had beat bama, then that would put them and Florida in over bama, and I would be fine with that.
