Pretty long lasting fad don't you think? Twitter is going to be around for a while. Not a huge fan myself but social media is a way for athletic depts to directly connect to their consumers. A very cheap, direct and effective way. It will hurt smaller schools like Tech more so than schools with the bigger budgets. Anyone seen the NCAA reasoning, not that they need one it is after all the NCAA.

While incredibly lame if your school is doing it, this seems pretty stupid and trivial to ban....so I guess it makes sense for the NCAA to step in

Do you not know how twitter works?
If people tweet about the game and use that hash tag in their tweet or just to discuss the school/team in general then anyone could just search for the hash tag to see all tweets associated with it.

so how is that free advertising for anything besides twitter? i get that you are gonna respond that it's for the school and shite, but no one using or caring about that hash tag is not either gonna already know it or become a fan of a school or anything. now if they have a deal with twitter and get paid for more people talking about it and shite, then yeah.

i do. i get it. i guess i just dont see anyone outside of people already using these hashtags to start now. im not gonna be watching a la tech game and tweet "solid game on espn9 right now #wearelatech." i probably shouldnt have argued the definition of advertising because it probably fits in there.
but im just trying to play the other side. i agree with the people saying if you want your school to look like a scrub, then go for it.

You can search without hashtags.
Are they gonna ban the hashtags that ESPN uses for every game they televise?

Based on that logic it makes no sense to advertise about your school on any platform bc only fans would care and they are already fans.
I don't think your understanding the degree to which the next generation is going to use/depend on social media like twitter.

i think i just dont use twitter so i really dont know enough to comment and shouldnt have because im not disagreeing at all with the rest of what you're saying

They have it on the scoreboard at the bottom of the screen at all times if I recall correctly. Which makes it much more prevalent than being spraypainted on a field.

Hashtags aren't an ad for twitter. They're an ad for whatever follows the hashtag.
I think the issue here is that the NCAA can't control or make money from this, so they banned it.
