NBA's link to 1990s continues to fade with Elton Brand's retirement

This is usually the way time passes, one quiet tick at a time until we glance back and notice all the doors that closed when nobody was watching. Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett left the NBA over the summer to various levels of fanfare and will eventually come back together for a Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2021 that will tip the all-time heavyweight scales of grandiosity, noise and accomplishment. Elton Brand slips quietly out a side door on the cusp of another season opener and it’s like the monthly meeting of vets at the American Legion Hall, where the attendance numbers grow small enough for everybody to sit at the same table.

Now we have Dirk, Paul Pierce, Vince Carter, and improbably Andre Miller if he is still looking for a team. Anyone else in the 38+ crew?

That '99 class was pretty solid but the top guys--Brand, Francis, and Odom--are the ultimate set of players who didn't fulfill their insanely high potential due to one or a combo of injuries, shite teams, not giving enough of a frick, alcohol, drugs, the down-low party lifestyle, and skittles.

I feel bad for Brand. Dude was trapped in Clippers purgatory for several All-Star seasons after Donald Sterling shocked the NBA world and matched a Miami Heat offer.
With Dwyane Wade, his career might have been entirely different.

Then GM Jerry Krause was more ecstatic about landing the #1 pick to sign Brand then he ever was when the Bulls won any of their 6 championships. Krause was so eager to prove to the world that he could win without Jordan...

Brand was a low-post beast when he was healthy and wanted to play.
