There are four different time zones to consider and nobody watches TV on Friday and Saturday.

I really don't get why they don't start 45 minutes earlier. There are plenty of people like my dad who don't even bother to watch once they realize that they'll never be awake for the ending.

West coast. Starting it at 9 is 6 in Cali. There are very few people on the east coast who won't stay up until 11:30 to see the end of the game, but there are a lot on the West who would miss the first hour or so if it was 8 due to work. That's also why the Sunday games start at 8 EST, because that's not an issue then.
