He asked them for a deal that exceeds 10 - $400 million.

Yep. They are one of the few that could afford him plus IIRC he grew up a yankee fan

Steinbrenner is saving up. He's gonna blow past the luxury tax line in a way that makes the 2015 Dodgers look frugal

As the biggest Nats fan on here, I think we all knew this was the case. I hope he tears it up in the first half of 2018 and DC gets a ridiculous haul at the deadline.

We've all moved into Trea Turner anyway

I'm more pissed we didn't resign Melancon.

I would pay it. They will make it up in merchandise. I watched the Braves try and go the econo route, and it has cost them revenue.

Will Harper even get $400 million in free agency? He's accumulated 22.9 fWAR over his five year career. Mike Trout has more than doubled Harper's WAR count over that same time period. Jason Heyward has been worth 22.7 fWAR over the last five years, hit free agency at age 26 (same age as Harper in 2018) and he ended up only getting a $184 million contract. Manny Machado is only three months older than Harper, and actually has a slightly higher WAR than Harper for his career (23.0). But if Machado asked for $40 million/year for the next 10+ years, most people would look at him as if he had three heads. Unless Harper is able to duplicate his 2015 season for the next two years, what would make any team think he would be worth that type of money?

Agree. He won't and he's not.

Or that they would spend 800 million dollars on two players

haven't looked the numbers but id guess they both have played in more games

then consider one of Harper's full seasons was played as a 19year old. Then consider he missed 106 games combined in his 20/21yr seasons.

Manny Machado has accumulated the same fWAR as Harper in 100 fewer plate appearances. And if you go by bWAR, Machado's actually been worth 3 more WAR than Harper in 100 fewer plate appearances. As for Trout, he only has 800 more plate appearances than Harper which is about 1.5 seasons. If you add 7 more WAR which is actually very generous considering Harper's up and down career to Harper's career total, there would still be a cavernous gap between Trout and Harper.

They have more resources than any other team so they could get both if they wanted
