You think it was an unfavorable and arbitrary chase format or did Hendrick allocate more resources to the 48 team?

Or, did he simply peak in late 90's and was no longer a formidable driver?

He would have more if they stuck to the prior system. At least that's what I've been told.

He won 3 with Ray Evernham, and 1 with Robbie Loomis

If Ray would have stayed, he probably would have hit 5

Just my take

This.

Plus after some of the things the 24 team did with Evernham on top of the pit box (The 1997 Winston T-Rex car, engine that grenaded right as he took the checkered flag and couldn't be inspected) had NASCAR keeping a tighter eye on them than other teams.

That's what I've heard. Also heard something about Tony Stewart's champ year as an owner that he wouldn't have won it under the old system. I think he had to win several in the chase after a poor showing in the first race or two and would have been eliminated, but since they reset points he was still close enough to win it.

Forgot Kurt won the inaugural chase title. I think he only won one race that year.

Yeah just like Kyle winning it last year after missing half the year.

I've read that he would've won at least 3 more if the old system had stayed.

Gordon could have had Johnson's crew chief.

What is everyone's thoughts on the Chase? IMO, I think it can be exciting at times because it adds some drama to the sport. I think the 2011 Chase was one of the most exciting because of the showdown between Stewart and Edwards. I think having the final 4 -winner take all format in the final race is also exciting. I think the old format of the Chase was boring especially when Johnson won 5 in a row between 2006-2010. Majority of those years, Johnson won by a decent margin and I don't think there was a ton of pressure on him. I'm not a Johnson fan but he has proven to be not only one of the best in NASCAR history but has proven how clutch he is in a playoff format. It is really crazy to think how things would have been different if they still used the old format. Gordon would have had 7, Johnson would have had 3, Edwards and Harvick with 2.

You can't make that comparison.

If he is racing for points in the "new system" it didn't directly correlate to the same points in the "old system". Strategy is different.

The competition got better and the cars were brought to common style.
