Solid career and very good driver. He cleaned up in IROC but I didn't realize he finished 2nd in points (5) times in Winston / Sprint Cup. He bounced around early between teams but certainly raced for a good one with Roush.

He didn't have the killer instinct. He didn't have the desire and mental toughness like tgoat.

He lost his father, stepmother and half sister in a plane crash in 1998. I've always wondered if he'd have won the Winston/Sprint Cup if that hadn't happened.

Because he finished 2nd to the following drivers:

Dale Earnhardt twice
Jeff Gordon
Tony Stewart
Jimmie Johnson

He lost out to some of the best drivers of all-time

He looked worn down when he finished a race

Never seen someone look so tired and just beat up

Mark Martin was known for just letting people pass him in the middle of the race. Kind of like Dale Jr does now. Martin always had good teams, he just never had the best team with the fastest cars and he couldn't make up for it when he never tried to go over 90% on the race track

Not to mitigate how AWFUL that situation was but nobody was beating that 24 team in 98. They were unbelievable

That pretty much sums up Mark. He was the nicest guy behind the wheel.

Mark Martin Epic Race loss

I'll never forget When he decided to come to victory lane a lap too soon and lost a race under caution. (Skip to the end to hear his comments) No classier way to handle that situation. Kyle Busch couls learn a few things....

At least one of those times, a points penalty cost him the title.
