As I've stated on this board before, my boss is a Penn State alum and her parents are very close to all of the people involved--her dad was on the board of the 2nd Mile, big donors, know the Sandusky's, Paterno's, etc.

She's obviously been very upset, not wanting to talk about it, etc, BUT then came this...

During our weekly one-on-one discussion, she went into a Rant about how the media is to blame for Paterno's firing because they sensationalized his role in the scandal.

She even went so far as to be upset at the media's assertion that more sexual abuse claims were sure to follow, now that Sandusky's abuse had been publicized. Pointed out that even though the grand jury report had 8 victims, only 2 had eyewitness reports, etc. (at one point I said, "well, let's be clear, ONE victim is too many")

I sat there mostly in silence as she went on for about 5 minutes with this and her pride in Penn State, it's all the media's fault, JoePa is the greatest man since the other one hung on the cross, etc

Isn't she part of the problem? Thinking that these people aren't accountable? What do you think of her claim that the media is to blame for Paterno's firing?

I'll hang up and listen...

People are delusional about things they love. Its easy to blame other things/people really hard to blame something or someone you love

Yes.

I work with a guy who is a Penn State Alum. His son is graduating from Penn State this spring.

He blames the culture, the people involved, etc. He wants it cleaned up, not covered up. He's saddened that Paterno's reputation is tarnished, but he also understands that Paterno should have done more, and that it's JoePa's own fault that his reputation is tarnished.

The media undoubtedly played a huge role in Joe Pa. being fired. I think that's indisputable.

I think people loyal to Penn State have a hard time knowing all Paterno has done that is good and then putting it together with this. I'm not saying he shouldn't be culpable, but it's tough to put the things together.

What do you want validation for your story.

Of course, alums and people connected are going to defend PSU...it's personal. Hell, family members defend and make excuses for criminals and sexual abusers/predators in their own family most of the time. Sandusky's wife/Bernie Fine's wife are just public examples of people who stand by and do nothing.

I don't understand this public need for everyone in the world to feel the same about this story. PSU people are allowed to go through the stages of grief.

Do you think that's a bad thing?

My boss thinks he should have been put on paid administrative leave, then resign. Would that have been markedly different?

Wasn't looking for validation or anything, just some good discussion, particularly since she is so close to the situation.

yes, and she's too close to the problem to be an impartial observer

as any impartial observer would tell you, JoePa had to GTFO right away after all this broke

Jim jones routinely ran suicide drills with his followers and few questioned it. So when it came time for the real thing, few questioned him.

she is stuck in the denial part of the grief process

she loves her alma mater - it is making her unable to reason normally

you did the right thing in remaining quiet, let people who she can't fire point it out when she is being stupid about the subject

it's a natural reaction to defend what you are emotionally attached to. plus she's a woman, so thinking logically is near impossible for her anyway.
