LLWS thread where people were rooting for Japan got me thinking...what are some of the most bizarre reasons you have heard for rooting for or against a certain team?

Mine is easy: one of my uber liberal/progressive classmates, born and raised in the USA, rooted for Ghana in the World Cup soccer game, citing U.S. arrogance and imperialism.

That's not uncommon. A lot of people root against their country in the World Cup.

Huh, didn't know that. Haven't met anyone else who didn't root for the U.S. Is it mostly politics?

I pull for Nigeria in most instances. If they played against the US, I wouldn't care who wins.

When I was younger I formed my teams I cheered for due to their colors and what their mascot looked like.

Since then I have continued to root for certain teams.

Lol. President Bush's highest approval rating is in Ghana. They love him over there and, believe it or not, they actually WANT the US to help improve things

I became a Dolphins fan at an early age simply because of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

I thought German heritage was the plurality 100 years ago for the United States. I feel like if Germany ruled Europe it wouldn't be all that unlikely

Apparently some were turned off by the Pennsylvania team for one reason or another.

Ummm.....you better go take a history class. We were isolationist in 1939 and did not want to be involved. Only when we were directly attacked did we start fighting.

ETA: I root for the Dutch as I was there for 2 weeks in 2010 when they made the run to the finals and got caught up in the excitement. I would root for the US if they played though.

American laws were very nearly translated into German across the board at one point. The vote to do so was missed by one. Granted it was in 1795, but still...

The Saints because of one reason and his name is Tom Benson. That scumbag greedy piece of garbage used Hurricane Katrina as leverage to extort hundreds of millions from unknowing state tax payers just to stay in NOLA. How can any Saints' fan think that is OK?
