Why not? McCullers is likely to be in the rotation for Houston for a while. I don't see why it doesn't count.

At the very least it indicates where he trends...
not a big enough sample size... I mean Betances has a 1.40 ERA in 51.1 innings, is a 13 inning difference close enough? 64 innings is a small samples size and doesn't indicate as much. when he gets to 100 then we can see if it continues

For a career, no. For a season...it's a reliable indication of what he's capable of right now.

I make the rules around here, not you. And I say 64 innings is enough.

His numbers as a rookie outpace Jose Fernandez when he was at the same spot.
after 11 games Fernandez had a 3.34 ERA then got hot, a couple of bad games (Fernandez had 3 during those 11 starts) and his ERA is back up. I think the 100 inning mark is a better indicator than 64 innings.

I mean Aaron Harang had a 2.02 ERA this year after 11 starts and 70 innings... so things can change quickly with so few innings pitched.

Maybe not but it depends. Do you trade an outfielder to get him? If so the numbers are right back where they were. Also, he is a great defensive player like Marisnick, but will provide much more offense than Marisnick.

Springer will be back in no sooner than 5 weeks, and we don't know how rusty he will be or how weak his wrist will be to affect his power.

If Luhnow isn't after Lind to improve 1B, he is surely looking for a stopgap OF to join Rasmus and Tucker while not having to trot Marisnick out there to die against RHPs.

64 innings... yeah that doesn't exactly count

Yes it does.

Astros have played 96 games... so no, it doesn't.

I'm just reporting the facts.

Astros have the 3 of the top 6 pitchers in ERA in the AL.

Those are just the facts. Sorry you don't like it.

I understand that..and I think its very possible his stats go a little down, but the potential is off the charts.

Guess at this point, while yes as his innings increase he may trend downward, but he has shown that on any single night he can be as electric as any pitcher in the league. Experience and maturity will only cement that.

Numbers can be compared but the point is, McCullers has elite stuff. A blazing fastball that moves plus a curve Fangraphs today just said is a clone of Kimbrel's. Assuming he is healthy, LMJ should continue to be at least pretty damn good this season.

64 innings out of 880 innings the Astros have played to this point... he doesn't qualify for the ERA title then he doesn't count

It's in the MLB Official Rules LINK

10.22 Minimum Standards For Individual Championships
(b) The individual pitching champion in a Major League shall be the pitcher with the lowest earned-run average, provided that the pitcher has pitched at least as many innings in league championship games as the number of games scheduled for each club in his club's league that season.

So during the season, it's counted as needed an inning pitcher per game played.

Sounding like some teams who are good with pitching, still might end up looking at a starter. There are so many top end pitchers on the block that u have to look and at least kick the tires.

Do the Astros go to an OF or look to upgrade 3B/C?

I mean the Brewers are a great trading partner with Gomez, Lucroy, Ramirez, and F. Rodriguez all available.

That is just stupid. He was been awesome so far. I expect his ERA to rise a bit as he pitches more but he certainly has pitched enough this year to know what to expect out of him.

Nobody was talking about winning awards and the arbitrary rules to qualify. He has the 6th lowest ERA in the AL. That's just the facts.

They wanted at least 1 more bullpen arm. Long season, and they have used the pen a lot more than they wanted, with all of the shuffling of pitchers after waino gone, garcia going down, etc.
