I would have loved to see the triangle with Kobe, Nash, Gasol, and Howard. That being said, the triangle still forces Nash to not be Nash. I'm pretty sure Nash could have learned the offense over the season as he seems to be a crafty kind of player (as is evidenced by his ability to remain one of the top PGs in the league despite declining athleticism). Howard is the real catch. He's the cornerstone of the franchise going forward, theoretically, so the hire has to appeal to him to make him stay. I don't know that he has the desire to learn the triangle, and even if he did he doesn't strike me as the most cerebral of players.

let's be fair. they ran into some great spurs teams, and would have had a title if not for leaving the bench-gate
where were all the lakers titles during that time?

nash howard drag screen will be fricking lethal. kobe weak side. pau is AMAZING at the free throw jumper.
the phil jackson triangle has a lot of the same problems as the princeton with regard to personnel. besides being motion predicated, it takes the ball out of the point guard's hands. that's why it was invented. for teams with a dominant post or pg.

Nash Dwight pick-n-roll will be basketball porn.
I may need to watch future Laker games with Kleenex nearby.
I like this hire. Their offense will be the tits and hopefully their defense will hopefully be decent. I would have preferred Sloan, but hopefully this works out. I was disappointed, but I have changed my mind.
Also, even though they may "chalk defense" under D'Antoni, they still have Dwight Howard, who is the better defender in the league, regardless of the coach. Also, Artest does a really job on Durant (maybe as good as anyone outside of Lebron).
There is definitely a little concern come postseason, but the 75 games will at least be sick as frick.

i don't know why kobe and dwight don't just take big steps up and manage the defense
kobe just has to buckle down and take a secondary role as a stopper first, scorer second
if you have a stopper at the rim and on the perimeter, you can do things

d'antoni has never had a defender anywhere close to dwight caliber.

Besides Phil Jackson, was there a better choice for the job?
Just wondering who else should/could have been considered.

the amount of people that know nothing about basketball on this board still astounds me.
it shouldn't.
but it does.

Not sure how I feel about this. I'd prefer D'Antoni over Brown, but Phil is Phil. Hopefully the learning curve for the players doesn't take too long.
I do think the national media, especially some of the guys closest to Phil/Lakers are overreacting about this hire. Rambis, Plaschke, Kerr, etc. are all in for the doom and gloom.

Yeah, that was exactly my point. D'Antoni has never had good defenders before. Dwight will improve D'Antoni's rep for defense a little (plus, so will winning).
Melo, Nash, Amare, etc. are not exactly all-defensive starts. All he had was Tyson Chandler for a short period of time.

my question is not the X and Os it is the players showing Dantoni respect. The best thing about Phil is his ability to manage egos. That is not Dantoni's strong suit.
Phil could always go "I got more rings than fingers" to keep players/kupchak/media in line.
The team will be fine running dantoni's system. Nash/pau pick and roll, kobe/dwight in the open court is what this team should have been doing all along. Bringing in Eddie Jordan and trying to run the Princeton stuff was stupid. That system completely takes away everything Dwight does well on the offensive side of the ball = run/jump/dunk.

Don't see how an up-tempo pace favors a team that has Gasol, Bryant, Metta, Jamison, and Blake as 5 of their top 7. Offense was already very good, now it goes to great but what does it do to their defense? Increasing their pace this year has already led to a worse defense despite adding Howard, don't think going even faster is going to help.
Long term, I like it when they can add shooters to spread the floor for the pick and roll and some athletes to help defend.

also, does no one understand the concept of pace? adjusted for pace, d'antoni led teams were about middle of the road defensively, with a very disintested amare manning the middle.
of course, teams score more against the suns. because the way the suns were playing led to more possessions for BOTH teams. which leads to higher scoring games.

this team won't be the fastest team in the league. it's that they'll be free to make decisions with these extremely high IQ players in kobe pau and nash. as it was, the lakers were playing one of the slowest paces in the NBA the last couple of years. even bringing them up to 10th in pace will be extremely different output.

The experts seem to think that defense is the Lakers problem. So clearly D'Antoni is the answer
re: Mike D'Antoni hired as Lakers Head CoachPosted by Vicks Kennel Club on 11/12/12 at 1:51 pm to LSU Fan 90812
Pace is definitely a double-edged sword for a coach's reputation. As long as the average margin of victory is as large as possible, what is the difference between 115-110 versus 95-90?
I think it will be so much fun and your TDBBL will benefit big time.
