My high school ran a wishbone offense that never passed. So when I was in middle school we ran the same bone offense. In 7th/8th grade we literally only had one passing play in the playbook, it was a bootleg off play action where there was a fullback running a 5 yard drag toward the sideline, tight end running a 10 yard drag toward the sideline, and a receiver running a corner route. If you were a receiver and that play got called when you were in the huddle it was like Christmas. It got called for me twice and was underthrown and intercepted both times.

It wasn't until 9th grade where we began to add more pass plays but still only passed about 5 times a game. Same with high school. Only about 5 passes a game.

the chances of a middle school kid throwing the ball, while wearing pads on target to another middle school kid, while being protected by a middle school line are very small.
not to mention the chances of the kid actually catching it

You talking 7/8 or 6th.. I coach 6th and we probably pass 7/8 times a game at most unless we are behind late.. Mostly TE seam routes off play action, quick outs and slants.. Our 7/8 team throws more and deep but it's usually on a rollout.. Getting the timing down between all parties is tough at that age.. Qb's don't have the time either as sustaining blocks is difficult at that age across an entire line..

ETA: we also throw at least one halfback pass a game.. Usually more.. Bootlegs work because they buy time..

My son threw 14 TDs his 8th grade year. Mostly play action passes. I think he threw 30 passes the whole year.

My school ran the Winged T from middle school through high school, so we very rarely ever threw the ball.

We throw typically 9-10 times a game. Tight End seam is NEVER covered. Bubble screens and slants work as well. Doesn't sound like much, but with 7/8 minute quarters, that's usually 25-35% of the plays. We typically get 2-3 possessions per half.

Also when we play certain schools they throw it 75-80% of the time. Richwood, Evangel, Bastrop seem to throw it a ton.

So you have travel ball pitchers all of the place that can throw and you can't find a serviceable receiver to catch a ball or 2?

Les Miles appears to be the coach on most of these middle school teams. 2 plays...run left, run right.

I played corner in 7th-8th grade. Used to hope they'd run a toss sweep to my side otherwise I wouldn't have shite to do.

I coach at a West Monroe feeder. We play 2 other WM feeders, Sterlington, Neville feeder, Ouachita feeder, Ruston feeder, Richwood feeder, and we did play Evangel and both West Ouachita feeders in the past.

I had two receptions in 8th grade playing TE. One was an underthrown ball to a WR further downfield. The other was a play that was designed to be drag route by the wing back, but he was never motioned over to my side of the field, so I ran the route so the QB at least had someone in the area he was looking to throw the ball.

That's unfortunate. We passed 10-12 times a game depending on opponent. A wing T with a threat of passing is fricking deadly in highschool. Safeties and linebackers always get lulled to sleep focused on the presnap motion, pulling guard, and hand off that half the time no one would even cover the tightend and playside wingback

with kids you typically want to give the ball to your best player in the safest manner possible... At least that's my theory.

It's much more fun to execute and win than sling it all over the place and lose.

In Ascension, It depends on the High school the team feeds to. DTHS is more of a run style offense so that kind of determines the style of play. Maybe your school hasn't put pass plays in yet. I was at the other DTHS feeder. THere were about 6-8 pass plays for one team and the other was 50-50 pass-run.

I'm not a coach, just my observations.

We basically had four plays in middle school because we had a D1 athlete in our backfield. 28/29 quickpitch and 24/25 GT.

We only threw on two-point conversions or on a rare bubble screen.
