One of the longest-running relationships between player and caddie is over.

Phil Mickelson and caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay each released a statement Tuesday explaining that the two have "mutually decided to go our separate ways," ending a run that dates back to 1992.

"Player-caddie relationships don't often last that long," Mackay wrote. "I wish Phil nothing but the best. His game is still at an elite level, and when he wins in the future (definitely the Masters), I will be among the first to congratulate him."

Mackay and Mickelson became one of the most-recognized duos in golf, combining for 42 PGA Tour wins including five majors. Mickelson, who turned 47 last week, has not won since the 2013 Open Championship. While he withdrew from last week's U.S. Open, he still sent Mackay to scout the course on the off chance he would be able to play.

"Our decision is not based on a single incident. We just feel it's the right time for a change," Mickelson wrote. "My relationship and history with Bones far exceeds golf. He has been one of the most important and special people in my life since the day we met and I will always be grateful for everything he has done for me."

Mickelson confirmed that his caddie for the remainder of the season will be his brother, Tim, who quit his job as Arizona State men's golf coach to become the agent for Jon Rahm. Mickelson is expected to make his next start at The Greenbrier Classic next month.

Phil wasn't winning enough for Bones. It happens. Bones will caddy for some kid.

Bones didn't want to be around for the scandal that's going to break.

This is weird. If Phil wanted to keep Bones, he could of easily paid him whatever it takes . I'm thinking that Phil's thinking "hey, I got this" "Bones, feel free to hit the road".

Im going to guess it's the other way around given it's Mickelson, and not some kid fresh out of q-school. Mickelson is on the backside of his career, and probably looking to gain any advantage the last few years.

The only part of me that wears a tiny tinfoil hat is this happened right after Mickelson withdrew from the US Open.

Paging Sam Burns. The amount of knowledge that Bones has of all the courses is invaluable.

Also consider that Bones just had a double knee replacement. He may be wanting to take a step back. Those caddies are walking ~ 40 miles each week with 50 pounds of clubs on their backs.

Exactly. That fool said he would give back a green jacket for one US Open and he skips the tourney because of a Thursday HS graduation. I have HS aged kids and they would tell me not to be a bitch and go play in the Open. Bones was like

Yea, this comes after Phil drops out the US Open for a graduation. Probably the final nail in the coffin.

Why I ask? Bones makes more than most 99% of people in a year. He didn't leave because Mick decided not to play the US Open get real. He is older and probably was happy with the time off.

Why can't his brother be a coach and agent?

It is pretty crappy that Bones had to go scout the course knowing Phil wasn't going to play it.

Let's see-go out and scout the course. Phil pays for travel, room, board, meals, and probably some salary. I think I'd take that deal..not a bad gig so far...more than I have in the bank...OT poor....
