Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson says the school’s first priority would be to join the Southeastern Conference — not the Big East.

“Quite honestly, the truth of the matter is the lifelong dream of Memphis is to get in the SEC,” Johnson said Thursday in a phone interview. “We’re surrounded by SEC country. When Arkansas got in Memphis thought they were going to get in.”

Johnson hired former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese on a six-month basis and gave him one overwhelming mandate.

“I told him, ‘It’s simple. There are six BCS conferences. Get us in one,’” Johnson said.

Johnson said the Big 10 and Pac-10 could also be options if a spot were to open up.

I always thought RC was an idiot, but now I think he's also on crack!

The pac 10 technically have two spots open, if they want to expand. They will never take Memphis though. They won't subject all of their team to have to fly across the country for them.....won't happen. Your right.........crack pipe must be on the nightstand.

Memphis would be a bottom feeder in most conference sports.

I honestly believe the only reason he thinks there is a possible chance for Memphis to join the Pac-10 is because the Grizzlies are in the Western Division and play west coast teams all the time. He fails to realize that NBA $ is not the same as College $.

Big East is their only option, but they have already said (Big East) that if ECU wanted to join it would have to be as football only, meaning the other sports hoops and all would have to find a new conference like the A Sun.

Memphis would have the same problem. There are already 16 bball playing schools in the Big East, who would they boot out? DePaul? Marquette? No way they lose their access to the Chicago market. Besides, the other 15 schools would raise a riot over another hoops powerhouse joining what is already the most difficult bball league-by far. (Nevermind the fact the Memphis bball is in the midst of a major investigation)

Sorry Memphis.

They really should join the Big 11. Then they could start having conf. championships. They could compete in almost every sport in the Big 10.

Yes, given the opportunity, Tulane would rather be in the SEC than the Big East, as well.

Duh.

But both Memphis and Tulane have the same chance of getting an invite.

Like the Outside of the Box thinking.

Haven't seen that mentioned on the CUSA Boards. The next time we get an expansion thread over there, I'll mention that idea.

Of Course Memphis wants to be in the SEC, the AD wants his part of the ESPN cash.

I agree they should join the big10, but conference championships aren't for every conference. Jim Delany has made it clear he doesn't want one, and that is one of the main reason that they remain at 11 teams, imo. However, I do feel Memphis would be a great fit in the Big10 as far as sports are concerned.

I didn't realize the BIG 10 actually has 11 schools in it.

I like the fact that Memphis is trying to get into a BCS league, but the SEC will never happen. Hopefully they can get into one. First good move that RC has made probably.
