The Maryland Terrapins will wear a new uniform inspired by their threads from the 1961 season when they play against Penn State on Saturday.

The “1961 Flashback Uniforms” will pay homage to the season in which Maryland last defeated the Nittany Lions at home. The Terrapins beat Penn State on the road last season, but have not won against the Lions at home in 44 years.

Considering the garbage they wear on a weekly basis, I'd support this change as a permanent solution.

I always thought these were cool... looks like airbrushed helmets of the Maryland flag like you'd see a hockey goalie wear.

Maryland gets way too much hate for their uniforms.

They do it because of the tradition of the flag. I think it's awesome.

What is the tradition? I mean there are about 15 different helmets they wear.

That being said, it is nice to see you coming to the defense of your Big 10 brethren.

It goes back to the Civil War.

I was gonna try and explain it but wikipedia does it much more succinctly:

quote:

The Maryland colony was founded by Cecilius Calvert, second baron and Lord Baltimore, (1605-1675), which was granted to him as George's son and heir by King Charles I, hence the use of his family's coat of arms in the flag. At first, only the gold and black Calvert arms were associated with Maryland, being reintroduced in 1854.[2] The red and white colored arms of the Crossland family, which belonged to the family of Calvert's (Lord Baltimore's) paternal grandmother, gained popularity during the American Civil War, during which Maryland remained with the Union despite a large proportion of the citizenry's support for the Confederacy, especially in the central City of Baltimore and the counties of the southern part of the state and the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Those Marylanders who supported the Confederacy, many of whom fought in the Army of Northern Virginia of General Robert E. Lee, adopted the Crossland banner, which was red and white with the bottony (trefoil) cross [2] (seen as "secession colors"). The black and gold (yellow) colors with the chevron design of the Calvert family were used in the flags and devices and uniform pins of the Union Army regiments in the northern Army of the Potomac.

quote:

After the war, Marylanders who had fought on either side of the conflict returned to their state in need of reconciliation. The present design, which incorporates both of the coats of arms used by George Calvert, began appearing.

So basically it was a compromise that lead to a hideous flag that is now steeped in American history and the Marylanders are very proud of it, as they should be.

I think these are awesome

Those throwbacks are horrendous. They look like a crappy version of an Old Miss jersey with an even crappier version of an LSU helmet and pants.

There is a much classier way of including the flag on the uni than those damn motorcycle helmets they've been wearing with 'Maryland' across the back.

The Orioles and Ravens have it within some of their logos and it doesn't look like shite. I bet the Terps can do it too.

These are exactly the same as their other uniforms in that I don't pay attention to them at all because I'm watching football and not fashion week. Sorry, boys. I'm just not gay.

I think a lot of the combos that Baylor and Oregon come up with are pretty cool, but I'm not really a fan of the Maryland stuff, although I can respect it since they are integrating the state flag.

I don't get why a lot of people around here hate on Oregon and Maryland for trying to be fresh and different.

I'm an LSU fan and I like the Maryland uni's as well. As a kid my uncle gave me a collection of state flags and i always liked the Maryland one.

The inconsistency of the colors is hard to look at. It's like 2 different uniforms thrown together.
