re: Maryland approves move to Big TEN

I agree on all points - the Big12 still needs a couple more top 15 type football programs to offset what is perceived as an "OU/Texas" league (hell, let's be honest, after the last couple years, an "OU" league).

If they stick with 14 and don't change the scheduling model to a 9 game schedule 5th year seniors wouldn't even play every team in the conference in a career.

From a money standpoint its good, but the league was more cohesive and the scheduling was easy and made more sense at 12.

Luckily the SEC is going to go to 16, and the scheduling models are better than the current system.

If you get the four schools that are the most rumored you get everything you could want.

FSU is a top 15 program which gives Texas and OU another major opponent.

Clemson is a solid addition, on the lines of a rising Oklahoma State.

Louisville wants in the Big 12 and would give West Virginia a nearby rival.

Georgia Tech can be competitive, but what they bring most is academic cred (which got hurt when A&M bolted).

Correct.

If you stick with two divisions, you would have to scrap the permanent rival format but you could play two teams from the other division each year (and in four years swap home-and-home arrangements).

If you went to a four-division, four-team per division alignment, you could do three permanent rivals and play the remaining three divisional opponents over six years home-and-home.

tOSU faithful, what's your feelings on reshuffling the divisions now?

I think that this move was inevitable. With the super-conference taking shape, the B1G is trying to get who they can before the choices are taken.

The B1G is heavy on academics and will only add school that are AAU.

Does Rutgers qualify?

Serious question.

What are you hearing about fan interest in the B1G trying to get a foothold in the South and picking up Georgia Tech?

Rutgers is an AAU member. So on that basis alone, yes.

So the acc will be at 15 after this move..
how so?
Just looking at football: Currently at 12, losing Maryland, and gaining Syracuse and Pitt...that moves it to 13.

Does that classification speak to the quality of academics?

Basically, are they in line with the supposed Big Ten academic qualifications?

Yes, AAU status is an academic status and is in line with the Big Ten academic qualifications.

They also have to be approved by the Big Ten universities plus the U. of Chicago, IIRC, because Big Ten membership means getting to be part of a major research collective.

To add to the financials. The ACC paid out $14 million in TV last year. The Big Ten paid $24 and is projected to pay $30 million by adding Rutgers and UMD. Even if it pays $28 million, UMD is doubling its TV revenues, a bonanza for a school in financial trouble. I do think their longterm prospects are better than people think, but that requires a stable conference, which the ACC ain't.

The SEC should be quietly talking to UNC and VT to go to 16. That would kill the ACC. Kill it.

I don't think that UNC will go to the SEC. They would want Duke to come with them and probably look down their nose at SEC schools' academics.

NC State, however, may be willing to play ball.

they will end up rotting away in the ACC

A lot of people are really upset that Maryland cut 7 sports less than a year ago and now has $50M to drop out of the ACC
